India's power plants are running dangerously short of coal

India may be staring at electricity shortages in the coming months because coal stocks at most of its power plants have dropped to critically low levels.

As many as 63 of the 135 coal-fired power plants in Asia's third largest economy have two days — or less — of coal supplies, India's Central Electricity Authority (CEA) said in a report on Tuesday. Coal stocks at 17 of them have been run down to zero, it added. In total, 75 plants are running with five days worth of coal or less

Coal accounts for almost 70% of the country's electricity generation.

So, why aren’t we selling them coal? We have plenty of it.

https://www.reuters.com/world/india/why-is-india-facing-coal-shortage-2021-10-01/

Price controls imposed on utilities by Government have resulted in them being deeply in debt to suppliers since they cannot easily increase prices to pay for increased raw material prices.

Another example of Government imposed failure.

There was a Freeper who posted recently that his coal mining son is working so much overtime now that he is going to be able to buy his dream home 3 years early.

USA is apparently producing as fast as it can but cannot keep up with demand

Send them a bunch of H1Bs to work in their coal mines.
As a bonus it will free up jobs for Americans.

We have minimal west coast shipping terminals for coal. Numerous plans for additional facilities have been systematically killed off by the leftwing greens.

India is also competing for coal imports regionally with China, which is facing a fuel crisis of their own.

I really do not know of another place for India to get coal. They might be having a rough time here pretty soon.

Forget the coal — pipe your LNG in from Iran.
Better yet, ship it in from a reliable source, the US.

China can’t get coal.
India can’t get coal.
Europe can’t get coal.
The US shut down some of it’s coal plants.

Yet there is enough coal in the various parts of the world to keep their plants running for centuries!

“There was a Freeper who posted recently that his coal mining son is working so much overtime now that he is going to be able to buy his dream home 3 years early.”

That was me but he is my renter. Works for Consol. Coal co’s are paying retired miners thousands of dollars in bonuses to come back to work. The mine is going 24/7.
He has been making a killing with double and triple overtime.

Coal is finnicky though. Next year if we have a moderate winter and summer he would most likely be paid off.

It’s a feast or famine business.

They have ship loads in Australia, my understanding is India will be getting a lot of coal from Australia especially since China ain’t using so much these days.

WoW - Does that mean the massive amounts of unregulated, and chocking, pollution in India might drop a tiny bit?
