Billionaire Ken Griffin, founder and CEO of the hedge fund Citadel, hinted Monday that he might move his company’s headquarters from Chicago, saying the crime makes the city more akin to a war-torn country.
“It’s becoming ever more difficult to have this as our global headquarters, a city which has so much violence,” Griffin said. “I mean Chicago is like Afghanistan, on a good day, and that’s a problem.”
Griffin said he personally saw “25 bullet shots in the glass window of the retail space” in the building he lives in, adding that someone “tried to carjack the security detail” that sits outside his house.
Griffin owns a $59 million Chicago condo, the most expensive in the state, according to Forbes.
The perception of crime has started making it difficult to recruit talent to Citadel’s Chicago campus, he said, and he can’t in good faith tell people the city is a good place to raise a family anymore.

That’s always the first thing I think of with multi-million dollar properties. You just weeded potential buyers down to a very very small group. And if you’re laying down that kind of money, I’d rather buy land where I want it, and have a home designed to my taste, my style, my needs.
For guys like him, he’ll figure out a way to pull out all the equity, sell it a loss and then write off the loss on his taxes or some other tax voodoo the Uber rich use.
I always wondered how the people of Chicago coexisted with the problem areas without doing something about it. It’s like they thought if they ignored it then it would go away. Moving from Chicago to NYC is going from the frying pan into the fire.
When he pulls up stakes and moves Chicago will take a big hit to their tax revenues.

I would almost guarantee that the Mayor Miami and other South Florida politicians especially those in the Palm Beach area have this guy on speed dial and are ringing his phone off the hook, I believe Ken Griffin has a huge Oceanfront estate in Palm beach.....

IMO, until recently most of the major crime was in low-income areas.
Given the choice, unlikely you would ever drive through them.
Years back I rode in an adventurous carpool, the quickest route to the suburbs was through the deep ghetto.
We only took that route on freezing days with dry streets.
Today I would not go that way in an APC!
