People with type 2 diabetes can achieve "remission" by sustaining normal blood sugar levels for at least three months without taking diabetes medication. There is still a lot of uncertainty around how long remission will last and what factors are associated with a relapse. A person may require ongoing support to prevent a relapse or a hyperglycemic episode, and the long-term effects of remission on mortality, heart health and quality of life are not well understood.
The authors developed the following criteria to help clinicians and researchers evaluate and study diabetes remission using more consistent terminology and methods:
1. Remission should be defined as a return of HbA1c to less than 6.5% that occurs spontaneously or following an intervention and that persists for at least three months in the absence of usual glucose-lowering pharmacotherapy.
2. When HbA1c is determined to be an unreliable marker of long-term glycemic control, fasting plasma glucose of less than 126 mg/dL (<7.0 mmol/L) or estimated HbA1c less than 6.5% calculated from CGM values can be used as alternate criteria.
3. Testing of HbA1c to document a remission should be performed just prior to an intervention and no sooner than three months after initiation of the intervention or withdrawal of any glucose-lowering pharmacotherapy.
4. Subsequent testing to determine long-term maintenance of a remission should be done at least yearly, together with the testing routinely recommended for potential complications of diabetes.
"Diabetes remission may be occurring more often due to advances in treatment," said Amy Rothberg of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. Rothberg represents the Endocrine Society as a member of the Diabetes Remission Consensus writing group. "More research is needed to determine the frequency, duration and effects on short- and long-term medical outcomes of remission of type 2 diabetes using available interventions."

The American Diabetes Association knew before 2006 that low carb dieting fixed diabetes, but chose to never tell anyone, because ‘low carb eating isn’t practical.’ So they just kept pushing high carb eating because that is ‘practical’ and ‘diabetics are going to die early, anyway,’ because drugs can’t stop the ill effects from their dietician-provided, required therapy, high carb diets.
“We want to promote a diet that people can live with long-term,” says Clark, who is vice president of clinical affairs and youth strategies for the ADA. “People who go on very low carbohydrate diets generally aren't able to stick with them for long periods of time.”

I thought diabetes was permanent?.....................
We have had an entire medical establishment that has been pushing deadly treatments to vulnerable people.
It is an outrage.
It is, if you follow your doctor's treatment plan.
Came here to say; Eat Real Food
Meat, nuts, berries, fruits, veggies.
It’s amazing the so-called scientists denigrating low carb/keto diets. I did one for four months at the beginning of this year and dropped from 185 to 160 lbs. And yet, I was given flack by my daughter who was taking biochemistry for her forensics science degree and a nephew who is in a masters program for nutrition science. Go figure!
Always question your doctors and dietitians. These people DO NOT KNOW EVERYTHING and you can know much more than your doctor by simply reading new studies and therapies your doctors never read or purposely ignore until 20 studies come out over three decades to nudge the AMA to finally “approve” of the change.
I post studies that give TANGIBLE HOPE and PRACTICAL THINGS TO DO that your doctors will never tell you about in the office.
What is the “treatment”
After COVID, it has become clear that 95% of them are glorified pharmaceutical sales reps.
If you don’t like the Chevy dealer’s high pressure sales tactics, the Ford dealer down the street probably isn’t any better. You need Mercedes-Benz level medicine to be treated with respect. Thanks, Obamacare...
“I thought diabetes was permanent?”
Type I diabetes is. It’s the complete lack of insulin production by your body.
Type II is insufficient production of insulin. The most common resolution to it is to typically lose weight. If you’re 5’ 10” 280 lbs with Type II, You lose weight to 210 lbs or so, the diabetes will frequently resolve.(not always, but often) Obesity is usually the primary factor. Cleaning up your diet works wonders too. Type II doesn’t have to be permanent, it can be resolved.

This has been known for a long time. Dr Joel Wallach has been talking about it for.....50 years?
Correct the Vanadium and Chromium deficiency and eat sensibly. And it goes away.
Type 2 Diabetes for the most part is a self inflicted disease, and most of the time it can be cured by changing your diet to a High Fat, Moderate Protein and Low Carbs.
Don’t ask your Doctor though, He/She will put you on a whole bunch of Drugs to try and cure it while prolonging your agony and disease.
The sugar lobby is stro-o-ng!
The obvious question... Are higher A1C levels truly indicative of Diabetes?
They’ve determined that I have type 2 Diabetes... Big problem... I am not overweight... I don’t eat sugary foods and frankly... I feel fine, but my Doc put me on Metformin because my A1C levels are high.... Then again, my cholesterol readings are also high and many years ago they put me on Lipitor... Then they sent me for a heart dye test and my arteries (according the heart doc) are as clean as a whistle... His words... Not mine. He told me to not bother with the Lipitor medication... My cholesterol levels increased again and my family doc put me back on Lipitor saying it couldn’t hurt.
The thing is... A lot of these drug companies pay doctors handsomely to push their dope... It’s very useful dope for those who need it... But do we all really need it?
For instance... Metformin was originally created to cure malaria in the early part of the 20th century... It didn’t work very well... So they then sold it as a flu cure... Didn’t work well for that either... Then the A1C test was created and they could measure blood sugar levels and discovered something called ‘Type 2 Diabetes’... It didn’t kill you immediately, but it would over several years... They started using the that old drug Metformin on these patients and they determined that it would lower blood sugar levels... So they finally found a disease that they could use the drug Metformin for, a drug originally created to cure malaria... Go figure.
Having been afflicted with Diabetes type 2 for twelve years I can testify that it is mostly a disease of changing numbers. It is now and has been for at least 12 years defined only by numbers

5.7 a1c...
To clarify-It helped me lower my A1c number significantly.
