MEXICO CITY, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Mexico is building a towering replica of the Templo Mayor, the Aztec civilisation's most sacred site, in the downtown of Mexico City to mark 500 years since the Spanish conquest of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan.

The mostly white mock temple will be on show in Mexico City's bustling main square, the Zocalo, close to the ruins of the real Templo Mayor, where the Aztecs venerated two main deities with elaborate pageantry and sacrificial offerings.

The temple was destroyed by Spanish forces after their 1521 conquest and subsequent razing of Tenochtitlan, which became Mexico City....

Now that they’ve built it, someone will feel compelled to put it to use, I’d guess.

Americans mask:

To save America,
Congress should bravely allow themselves to have their
hearts taken out THE AZTEC way, one at a time,
until their (self-created) coronavirus pandemic is gone.

this is confusing to me. Why celebrate a cannabalistic death culture that decimated native slave populations to obtain human sacrifices, and yet keep all of the european spanish elements of culture that rejected the barbarism ? It’s like longing for the Dark Ages of anarchy and superstition.

It can’t be authentic without a lake surrounding it.

"Lopez Obrador had previously sought an apology from Spain and the Vatican for human rights abuses committed during the conquest of what is modern-day Mexico."

Uhh...I think the Aztecs were THE human rights abusers of their time.

“this is confusing to me. Why celebrate a cannabalistic death culture that decimated native slave populations to obtain human sacrifices...”

Mexico treats Hernando Cortes as the great villain of their history and Cuauhtemoc, who succeeded Montezuma, and fought against the Spanish as the great hero. Mexican historians dare not acknowledge that the Aztecs were, in fact, cannibals on a huge, perhaps unprecedented scale.

The Spanish did the world a favor destroying them.

The Spanish heroes arriving there is analogous to allied forces rolling into nazi concentration camps.

Mexico still celebrates Columbus Day and October 12 is a National Holiday.
Every major city has a street named 12 de Octubre.

They do more than we do in that respect for western history.

Lots of streets in Mexico named after Columbus as well, “Avenida ColĂłn”, etc.

This is like Germany recreating the Nuermberg Stade where the Nazi rallies were held.

“Mexico treats Hernando Cortes as the great villain of their history…

You only have to know that Cortez is portrayed as a syphlitic criminal lunatic in the murals which decorate the Mexican Presidential Palace, while Cuauhtamoc is on their currency, like George Washington is on ours, to see that this is true. But something else is at play here: Mexicans are too proud to judge their culture. They may gripe privately, but to do so in public, especially to a foreigner, is inexcusable. This is so different than what’s popular here, where to apologize for our history and shortcomings is seen as elevating.

Do not be surprised when the “green” goblins begin once again sacrificing humans to “save the planet!” like the Aztecs did.

The filth that runs America believe citizens are nothing but animals to use and treat as they see fit. It is time for new leadership.

When my daughter attended 5th grade at a private school in Phoenix she was asked to do an assignment for Spanish class "Who is your favorite Mexican?" I talked her into choosing good old Hernan Cortes because he ended human sacrifice in Mexico.

Aztec blood sacrifice from the Codex Magliabechiano

I'm also ashamed to admit that I also planted in my daughter's essay the fact that Mr. Cortez Concord Mexico with just a few hundred Spaniard Conquistadors and about 100,000 Indian allies from tribes that hated the Aztecs. my daughter is a lefty liberal now because she's 26 and I'm sure she has fun memories of the experience.
