Twenty-one people running a mountain marathon have died in northwestern China after hail, freezing rain and gale winds hit the high-altitude race, state media reported Sunday.
After an all night rescue operation in freezing temperatures involving more than 700 personnel, rescuers were able to confirm that 151 people were safe out of a total of 172 participants. Twenty-one had died, according to the official Xinhua News Agency, which said the runners suffered from physical discomfort and the sudden drop in temperature.

Similar type event Germany’s highest mountain (Zugspitz) in 2008. After two were dead, they kinda stopped the race at that point.

Why so many runners in such a grueling race?
People are just dying to accomplish the feat.
I have a buddy who was in some government work in China just before the Beijing Olympics. The air was clear and he asked his Chinese interpreter if he wished it was like this all the time. His interpreter said he didn’t care and “China has many people.” Meaning they could kill off a lot and not notice.
Why do humans mt. climb? Try to catch the big wave? Step into the ring?
Because we are humans and in some of us, there is that drive to push our human bodies and minds to the limits. Nobody ever scaled a rock face or ran a marathon because it was easy and safe.

In ‘68 I was on the Zugspitz. At its base the temperature was around 75F. At the peak it was around 25F! Probably a normal deviation.
