DEPARTURE OF THE PRINCE; Editorial-What the South Wants; What the Ultraists of the South Expect from Lincoln’s Election (10/16/1860)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 10/16/1860

The hour for the departure of the Prince of Wales and his party, was fixed at 9 o'clock A.M. Accordingly, thousands who had been disappointed of a view of the illustrious stranger, availed themselves of the only remaining chance to see him as he left the Fifth-avenue Hotel. Here crowds gathered at an early hour, and remained patiently awaiting his appearance. At 9 3/4 o'clock the Royal party entered their carriages, and amidst the cheering of the assembled multitude drove rapidly to the revenue cutter. The Harriet Lane was awaiting at her anchorage off the Battery at the appointed hour of the departure of the royal guest. Capt. FAUNCE had been industriously at work, day and night, to have everything inapple-pie order. Dodworth's splendid band was engaged to accompany the party to West Point, and Mr. STETSON, of the Astor House, as on the former occasion, was to provide the collation on board. The weather, which, on Sunday night was the stormiest of the season, and threatened to disappoint the hope everywhere indulged that the Prince would have a pleasant day in which to take leave of New-York, happily cleared off at the right moment. The wind blew very chilly from the northwest, but the sun rose pleasantly. For the better convenience of the party, it had been decided that the Prince should embark from the foot of Hammond-street, instead of from the Battery, thus avoiding the drive and the consequent excitement through Broadway. The Harriet Lane remained at her anchorage until 9 o'clock, waiting for the arrival of the band, but they did not appear, and the steamer was accordingly started for the place of the Prince's embarkation, up the North River.
