THE PRINCE AT THE WEST; AFFAIRS AT THE NATIONAL CAPITAL; The Lady Elgin Disaster; Military and Naval Intelligence (9/25/1860)

Special Dispatch to the New-York Times. CHICAGO, Monday, Sept. 24. The Prince had an agreeably busy visit here. Long JOHN WENTWORTH had notified everybody as to his movement, and consequently everybody saw him ride to visit the grain-elevator, the water-works and the Court-house. The Prince displayed himself on the balcony of his hotel at 1 1/2 o'clock on Saturday. The crowd which assembled to greet him was a motley one -- the rich in carriages and gorgeous apparel, and the poor on foot, clad in homespun. The Prince bowed from the centre and the two ends of the balcony, and the crowd cheered each bow to the echo. Long JOHN took him everywhere, and showed him up as a manager would an elephant. Presentations were made of distinguished citizens, of addresses, and of miniature barrels of flour. The Prince acquiesced in all Long JOHN's suggestions, with the exception of making a longer stay. He also did all that the people demanded, except reply to their salutations with a speech. His coming was anxiously looked for, his presence was hailed with every demonstration of respectful enthusiasm, and his departure, at 2 o'clock on Saturday, was taken to the sorrow of his hospitable hosts, who accompanied him in long procession to the depot. Yesterday he spent at Spencer's Station, some seventy miles from here. To-day he hunts for game, and will appear for the first time in a new and original style of Zouave jacket, short trousers, and high yellow boots. Tuesday he will do the same thing. Wednesday he will be in St. Louis. The rest of the programme, as published in the TIMES, will be adhered to, except a diversion to Richmond, where he will spend the 6th and 7th proximo.
