If Biden gets elected and the gun control gears up (as it inevitably will) I am going to put up a sign in my front yard asking people to turn in their guns and ammo to me instead of the “new revolutionary communist government.”

Hair raising, Matt, Thx. Really hair raising. My wife and I are in our 70s now. We’ve made all we’re going to make. We’ve saved all we’re going to save. If some a$$hole, or group of a$$holes, have decided to manipulate the dollar until it’s worth nothing, we’re on the street. So we’re VERY concerned.

I’ve purchased many cases of ammo in the past in different calibers (because I like guns, hey!) in case the SHTF. But I never really intended to use it primarily as moolah. And in California, I can’t order it pretty much under the radar through the mail anymore, as in the old days.

Crap! All my guns and all my ammo (except the first few rounds I’ve saved for the first commie bastard through the door), and all our money, is going to end up in the hands of communists anyway, no matter what precautions I took, crap!

“That said, if possible you might want to pick up a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 pump shotgun in 12 gauge for home defense. Walmart still has plenty of 2 3/4” 12 gauge in #7 1/2 shot (birdshot). If you can find #6, #4 or even buckshot get some. Any of the above will ruin someone’s day.”

Better yet, take those birdshot loads dump the shot out and melt it into a ball the .690 ball fits exactly into the shot cup the birdshot was in and weights 1oz which is at or less that what the shot weight was. This is vitally important that the weight does not go up for the shell as pressure follows weight. These balls are absolutely deadly out to 75 yards. I use them to blast feral hogs on WMA land where it’s shotgun only rifles are banned. Slugs are well over a buck a shot for cheap fosters and $5 for debit, using Wal-Mart bulk bird shot they are 25 cents each plus sweat equity.

My mossy 500 will put 5/5 of these redneck slugs into a paper plate at 50M and all 5 into a man sized silhouette at 75 with a modified choke. I use my Coleman stove and a cast iron 6” minipot to meltem. Star crimps you can redo by hand ,roll crimps need another tool.

Can confirm CBees are about at loud as a pellet gun when fired from a 20” 22lr. Colibri are even quieter I use them for tree rats getting at my bird feeder they fully penetrate a treerat in the boiler room at 20 feet. They are so quiet they make a little pook sound. 20gr at 500 fps is twice the KE of a 177 pellet at 700 fps

Just got back from the firing range. 9x19 was available so I shot a few rounds. I feel much better.

I have been shooting the bow this summer. Cheaper, saves my ammo supply, and is not crowded like the gun ranges.

Win all around.

I would also buy magazines for the guns you want but do not own yet. Pick up 33 round Glock mags, if legal in your state, and just store them. If you never use them, they will be a store of value if TSHTF.

Ammo is good longer than you’ll be alive. No need to turn it into a science project.

What kind of range prices did you see?

Also take a legal class to understand self defense laws in your state. Do they have castle doctrine AND how do they define it? Do they have stand your ground? Even if you are not going to EDC carry everyday you still need to understand when you can and when you cannot as well as when you should and when you should not.

“So, I have >500 rounds of 9mm.

What scenarios do you think I might need that much?

Zombie Apocalypse? The rounds would come in handy.

Neighbourhood invasion by armed Antifa fascists? How many shots would I fire with my little gun before I get taken out?

Hot civil war (yes, we are in a cold civil war right now)? Taking on heavily armed insurgents?

Somebody here help me out.”

You have to think a little more widely, and not just bout yourself and your gun.

1) You might need to share your ammo with, or arm, others—significant other, spouse, parents, children, siblings, neighbors, and their families—you know, those people you love and on whom you depend to help keep the crazies from coming in your back door while you handle the front door, but who might not have any or enough ammo, or might not even have a gun. You can’t do it all by yourself, you need others. You have to sleep sometime.

2) You might need to supply more than one weapon you have with ammo, in case your primary gun fails or is taken from you or you aren’t close to it when you need it. You should have a hold-out gun, or a back-up gun, such as a slightly smaller weapon hidden in your home (but readily accessible) or on your ankle or in your front pocket. Same caliber as your main weapon is good, so you need to put ammo in that gun and its magazines/cylinder/speedloaders, so that those guns are ready to go, so your ammo “store” decreases due to that. Can’t wait until you need it and then load up the magazines or cylinders. But how is that “little gun” in your newly-experienced shooting hands gonna stop the thugs with their firebombs, slings, slingshots, and bows hitting away at you, your loved ones, and your abode from 40 yrds. plus? You need ANOTHER GUN, a long gun (as opposed to a gun for the hand), with better accuracy and easier aiming ability for the distant shots, and with bigger magazines, say 30-rounds. Yeah, you can buy silly-looking long magazines and even drum magazines for 9mm handguns (most “double-stack” 9mm handguns hold about 15 or 16 at most in the mag), but I wouldn’t trust my life on those aftermarket fashion accessories. But a semi-auto rifle was born to eat big magazine after magazine, and to reach out and touch someone meaningfully at a distance. There are 9mm carbine (short barrel) rifles, even AR-15 type weapons and nice German-made combat rifles (Heckler & Koch MP5, for example) that shoot 9mm, so you might need more ammo if you’re going to feed both a handgun and a rifle (and a backup handgun). But you probably should get a different caliber rifle, one with more oomph, such as an AR-15 in .223 (or 5.56 mm), and ammo for that rifle. And see # 1 above.

3) You might need to trade or sale your 9mm ammo to get more ammo in a caliber you need or to supply ammo to others that need it (that you wouldn’t be giving it to otherwise). And see # 1 above.

4) You might need to trade ammo for food, water, medical supplies, etc. And see # 1 above.

5) Ammo is heavy. You won’t be able to carry all you have, or even a lot, as you go about your normal day to day post-apocalyptic activities, so you’ll have to leave it behind somewhere, either guarded by others or hidden. And things do get stolen, or seized, or burned up, or corroded, so you need some in more than one location.

6) You might need to hunt with the weapon, not just use it for people self-defense or strategic offense, or you might need to use it against wild dogs, coyotes, wolves, feral pigs, etc. That would eat up your supply significantly. And see # 1 above.

So, yeah, you can carry on happy-go-lucky with your little pistol and 2 or 3 extra mags on your person or in a carry-all bag, and have another 450+ rounds at home or in your car, and if nothing happens, you’re golden, but if you need it, you’re going to need a lot, and in different calibers, and for a long time, and for a lot of reasons. Store it in cool, dry, secure locations and it will last for decades. And keep it to yourself, or just to truly trusted loved ones and friends.

Paranoid? Pessimistic?
Maybe.
But forewarned is forearmed.

I remember, years ago, a guy at the LGS demonstrating the colibris in the shop. I used to fight getting CB Longs into the 10-22 chamber. I was ecstatic when a LR option came out. The frangible HP was icing on the cake.

CB shorts only get fed to my heritage 6 shooter they suck in my Remington semi. Colibris won’t cycle the rem but they feed great from the mag and oh so quiet. on my G2G 1911 with CCI subsonic or CCI quiet 40gr with the lightest recoil spring they cycle like a dream. my AR22 upper also likes the CCI quiets they cycle as well. I shoot in the back yard on the regular into a dirt trap I made none of my neighbors have ever said anything not called Johnny laws. The CCI subsonic are definitely louder than the Quiets but wear safe at 100dbs or less on my sound meter.

“You can take a light weapon and put the hurt on them before their handguns, shotguns, or poorly aimed long rounds find you.”

Guys at my range are having 200 YD .22 matches. A .22 will kill you dead. At 100 YDs .22 sub-sonic through a rifle without a can is very quiet.

I reload 12 and 20 gage. There is a difference. Reloading the spent shells is mush less hassle than trying to find what you want in loaded shells.

Your weapon choice fits home protection well, for break-ins. You need a rife or pistol caliber carbine for more ‘tedious’ work. If you can get it, buy an AR lower made for shooting 9mm. My home defense threshold is a Glock 17 with a Glock 34 threaded barrel and a shockwave brace attached. Don’t own a suppressor but can make one up quickly if we get to wrol, the booster being the only problem.

Do you have three or four nagazines loaded up? Buy mags ... and load them up.
