Amid growing pressure from Native American groups, sponsors, and even the city's mayor, the Washington Redskins have announced they will conduct a 'thorough review' of the team's name, which is considered by many to be offensive. 'In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team's name,' read the statement. 'This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks.' Friday's statement came after the team received a formal name-change request from FedEx, which was ostensibly using its leverage as the title sponsor of the Redskins' stadium in Landover, Maryland to persuade franchise owner Daniel Snyder.

How long does it take to do a review of the name: “Washington Redskins”? No time at all.

Something is wrong. The recent insane hysterical fit that’s sweeping the nation is billed as being about the death of a black man. What’s the connection to “Redskins”? The name isn’t Washington Blackskins, after all.

I think part of what’s going on here is that pressure groups never let a crisis go to waste.

There’ve been demands for years to get rid of Indian nicknames.

I think the pressure groups are taking advantage of the current climate to press again thinking that this is their chance to get rid of the Redskins nickname.

How about the Washington Weasels? The can use as their logo two masked people dressed as Congress Critters exchanging money in from of the U.S. Capitol. Or how about giving non-official Washington back to Maryland and naming the team the Chesapeake Chickens?

And that, I believe, at the heart of the matter. Indians, as feared as they were, were respected. Indians were formidable foes. That’s why teams were named after them. Their young men were called ‘braves’ for a reason. But teams weren’t called ‘Blackskins’, were they. What does that say?
