Age-related heart disease linked to gut bacteria metabolite

A number of studies have linked TMAO to heart disease, however, until now it hasn’t been clear exactly how this metabolite causes cardiovascular damage. A robust new study, published in the journal Hypertension, is offering one of the first thorough mechanistic investigations illustrating how TMAO damages the cardiovascular system.

“Our work shows for the first time that not only is this compound directly impairing artery function, it may also help explain the damage to the cardiovascular system that naturally occurs with age,” says Vienna Brunt, first author on the new study.

I'll give you my cheeseburgers when you pry it from my cold, dead hands...

Well, I did cut back years ago with the discovery of my very own personal stash of gallstones; and still have them.

Well, I just had quadruple bypass surgery in mid April, so I can blame my gut bacteria, and not bacon and cheese?.....................

Cheeseburgers are fine, just ditch the bun.

The problem was more likely related to the bun than the bacon and cheese.

My doctor said I was a ‘Lucky man’. Most people don’t discover they need quad bypass until AFTER the autopsy!...............

As medical remedies go, red wine and olive oil consumption is one I’ll indulge in even without the benefits.

I’ve also found that regular consumption of yogurt with live and active cultures has reduced my diverticulitis from 6 times per year to never.

Rather concerning to read that red meat, eggs and other animal products increase the gut’s production of TMAO. Kept reading and found that, thankfully, olive oil and red wine limit the production of it. We eat plenty of red meat, eggs, butter, etc. But I also buy olive oil by the large tin and drink box after box (don’t judge me!) of red wine.

Had a checkup with the cardiologist yesterday-everything looks good. It’s just that my family Cardiovascular history is about as bad as it can get so I am careful about our diet.

all gut bacteria imbalance is caused by LOW stomach acid. There’s essentially no such thing as high stomach acid (and yet the MMC (mainstream medical community) is quick to prescribe antacids.

cut out any and all wheat for a month and see if that does anything for you too.

I did and it changed my life completely. No more joint pain, no more severe stomach heartburn and indigestion. And dropped 4 inches in pants waist sizes

“regular consumption of yogurt with live and active cultures”

Is there a way around eating yogurt, e.g., supplements, to get the same benefits? I know it’s good for you, but it’s the one thing that triggers my gag reflex and I couldn’t possibly eat it. (When DH eats it, I have to go to another room because of the smell.) I would love to have the benefits, though.

“In subsequent mouse studies the researchers found feeding young animals TMAO rapidly degraded vascular health. After several months of being fed TMAO the young animals’ vascular function effectively resembled that seen in very old mice.”

And that right there is the problem with the study.

Lol! Maybe if you had a gigantic straw :) One box equals 4 bottles. Plus air doesn’t get in the box (really the bag within the box) after opening so it stays good longer.

I’m frugal. I used to work in fine dining and discovered that a couple of winemakers we carried also sold boxed wine. There’s not really a difference between their bottled and boxed wine except that it’s less than half the price.

"God wants to keep me around for a little while longer for some reason. I just gotta figure out what!.............."

I survived a ruptured ascending aortic an seven years ago. God placed me in the hospital when it happened. Throw in a cardiovascular surgeon who refused to let me die on the table and I have a mystery with no clear answer.

“regular consumption of yogurt “

Love yogurt and have made it for years.

Viili yogurt is my current favorite, no equipment needed.
Sometimes called countertop or room temperature yogurt.

Once the starter is at full strength after a few generations.
Just mix two spoons full and set out overnight, then refrigerate, eat...
