Tony Curtis served in the Navy Submarine Service in WWII as a Signalman 3rd class. While loading torpedoes at Guam, he was injured and lay paralyzed for several weeks.
Curtis always supported the Navy, though, and of course played the roles with great talent!

Lt. Cmdr. Matt T. Sherman: Molumphry, will this boat go down?
Chief Molumphry: Like a rock sir.
Lt. Cmdr. Matt T. Sherman: Mr. Watson, how are the plates?
Lt. Watson: Tight as a drum sir.
Lt. Cmdr. Matt T. Sherman: And the engines, Tostin?
Chief Mechanic’s Mate Sam Tostin: Factory fresh, sir.
Lt. Cmdr. Matt T. Sherman: Well how about it?
Capt. J.B. Henderson: I say take your thieves and these liars here and get the hell out. Oh there’s one stipulation, you’ll engage no enemy shipping and that includes lifeboats.
Even if you see one of them swimming in the water, avoid him. He might kick a hole in your side.
Good luck Matt.

I like the foundation garment engineering bit!
Couldn’t do that these days. They don’t make ‘me like that any more.

Chief Mechanic’s Mate Sam Tostin: [speaking to Maj.Heywood in the engine room] You know, I spent a lot of years disliking women. But I don’t dislike you.
Maj. Edna Heywood, RN: Oh?
Chief Mechanic’s Mate Sam Tostin: You’re not a woman. You’re more than a woman. You’re a *mechanic*

I do feel bad for poor Seaman Hornsby, though. I know he was a perfect swine, but still! :-(

Was adapted into a crappy TV series in the late 70’s featuring a young Jamie Lee Curtis.

They don’t make movies like that anymore. With the SJW crowd, they can’t. That, and movies like “Airplane”, “Blazing Saddles”, “The Producers”, etc.

I think it is great when the Director, Blake Edwards, left in a true gaff at the end of the movie. The older boy playing Tony Curtis’ son, greets Cary with his real name, “Mr Grant” as he steps on the dock! Wonder whose kids got that brief piece of screen time there, 2 boys and the 4 girls barely seen from the second car?
