The Cherokee Nation recently stripped citizenship from a majority of African-Americans who descended from slaves of wealthy Cherokee Indians before the Civil War. Host Michel Martin discusses this controversial move with MacArthur Fellow Tiya Miles, who studies interrelated histories of African-Americans and Native Americans.

There was a African American group dressed up as Indians that did an old music video. Very non-PC. Funny as heck.

Can’t say as I rightly blame em in this present political climate.
In old segregated Maryland, there were four school systems; white, black, Indian, and Wesort.
Indians owned alot of black slaves.
The Cherokees had black slaves, as well as the other “Civilized Tribes.”

I am familiar with Cherokee script, but not wealthy Cherokee Indians.
There were quite a few blacks who owned slaves in the South. I am certainly not going to track it out, but I have read that the percentage of blacks who owned slaves in New Orleans in 1860 exceeded the percentage of whites who owned slaves.
I like it.
Seems like Jimmy Hendricks was part Indian. And there was a 7 foot center for the Boston Celtics who was part Indian. Of course I do not know which tribe for either of those guys. If you are an Indian you get to start up a gambling casino. So maybe this is all about who gets special permission to open up a place of business.
They even had a slave rebellion in 1842.

The Cherokee Nation initially fought with the Confederacy, although it eventually split and factions fought for both the Confederacy and the Union.

By the way, the Bill of Rights does not apply to Indian Tribes. So they can do all sorts of things neither the federal government nor the states can do.
