LA CROSSE, Wis. (FOX 9) - So many mayflies hatched at once near the Mississippi River Sunday night it was picked up on the National Weather Services radar.
The National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wisconsin shared an image of the radar, showing a mass appear over the Mississippi River on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border around 10 p.m.

Had a bunch around Michigan yesterday, but no massive swarm that would show up on radar.
Fish, birds, critters overjoyed
Lived near Lake Winnebago for 10 years. Caused a disgusting mess. Swarms looked like rain clouds.
Years ago I was camping on a small island in the Mississippi when this happened. There were so many they literally darkened the sky. Needless to say we caught no fish that weekend.
The boat launch in Savanna was being cleared of the dead ones with a snow plow.

In Wisconsin last week fishing on the Chippewa River... the May flies were in the air and the Dragon flies were “attacking” and picking off the May flies in flight! It was like watching a war between the two insects. Great time. The Dragon flies did not go hungry!
I grew up in St. Clair Shores, MI, a burb of Detroit. Every Summer these guys (we called ‘em Fish Flies,) would show up and cover everything.
In High School I had a dishwashing job, and at night these critters would congregate under the street lights. I had to ride my bike through them and it was slipperier than ice.
Living in Dubuque during high school. I witnessed the mayfly phenomena. Remember bridge over Mississippi being closed because they made it slick as ice. They only live a short time and the millions of stacked up rotting corpses put up a beyond wretched stench.
The funniest thing was seeing two guys pulling their boat into the marina while yelling they were going to get stung to death by them. Their boat had 3 or 4 inches of dead Mayflies in it.
Funny and nasty all at the same time.

And to think some people voluntarily live there....
Which was June 7th.
I was reminded of what the White Rabbit exclaimed:
"I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date! No time to say hello, goodbye! I'm late! I'm late! I'm late!"
I was vacuuming dead ones out of my boat the entire summer.
Awful.

I believe it. On that car lot deal I put them into 55 gal drums and hauled them to city dump. The stench of them lingered on inside the cars.
Id almost forgotten about the two guys in the small boat slowly pulling into the marina in Savanna screaming for help because they were afraid they were going to be stung to death.

Yes, they thought they stung. It was hilarious. They were moving at no wake speed for a couple miles down the river. When they got to the marina they were too scared to move screaming that they were going to die.
I thought the guy running the boat launch was going to soil himself he was laughing so hard. Hell, I nearly did.
