Newly discovered Comet SWAN has already developed an impressive tail. The comet came in from the outer Solar System and has just passed inside the orbit of the Earth. Officially designated C/2020 F8 (SWAN), this outgassing interplanetary iceberg will pass its closest to the Earth on May 13, and closest to the Sun on May 27. The comet was first noticed in late March by an astronomy enthusiast looking through images taken by ESA's and NASA's Sun-orbiting SOHO spacecraft, and is named for this spacecraft's Solar Wind Anisotropies (SWAN) camera. The featured image, taken from the dark skies in Namibia in mid-April, captured Comet SWAN's green-glowing coma and unexpectedly long, detailed, and blue ion-tail.

Great photo at link. This is surely an indication of global warming.
Cool photo. I miss the APOD threads
How does one divine, that the traditional ion tail of a comet, in its passing through our small solar system, as they have done throughout recorded history, and be classified as an exo-system piece of rock, become a “victim of intra-solar-system global warming”?
Maybe it should wear a mask.

Comet HaleBopp... The last clearly visible and spectacular comet to pass us by... Well, it passed some of us by... The Heavens Gate crew caught a ride on it.
With all the hordes of tourists in Namibia where could they find room to do the images?
A struggle to keep them six feet apart.
True... We will likely see many more comets in the future due to global warming.
Something else that is likely to increase due to global warming... Many more sexual assaults that aren’t really sexual assaults by Joe Biden.
Just like the six degrees of Kevin Bacon, everything connects to global warming.

Meant to say, best visible in SOUTHERN Hemisphere, won’t be visible in Northern hemisphere until late May.
Never saw that one.
Saw Tremors, though.
Well, you know how popular Namibian goats are.
Why are you posting pictures of Adam Schiff?
Oops, ...........that’s Marshall Applewhite.
One in the same?
It would be cool if Comet SWAN was visible in the constellation Cygnus, but if it is more readily visible south of the equator that may be out of the question.
