Geez, it seems a number of FReepers are already among the affected. Maybe this will turn out to be one of those “Updates of the Damned” events.

And as pointed out, home users cannot refuse the updates or turn off the auto-update function (they can only delay it a little while).

I’m among the lucky business users whose updates are controlled locally with a WSUS server, and our IT Security officer vets them before letting them roll out.

But then again, there is that VM of Win10 Pro on my home system that I haven’t used in a couple of months. Better update that — after doing a full backup, of course....

I’m new to win 10. But I still use the programs to protect it.
See my previous posts to find out what they are. Next time, spend the money and buy an Apple.

What good is a dead machine that you don’t know how to maintain? Average age: 1 year? Maybe 2?

Did you try the one with renaming utilman.exe?

I’m blocking updates for the time being. My Win 10 laptop is pretty much for entertainment anyway. I keep it primarily as emergency backup in case my work/desktop machine goes down. Which, ironically, matters little since the government has essentially put me out of business.

All files from the C: drive erased? Yeah, I can see that being a problem alright.

I was hoping to find an easier solution. I’m not sure what will happen if I start messing with the cmd files.

The dreaded BSOD. It happened to me twice this year (my PC). Once in February 2020 and once in April 2020.

I have never had that happen to me in all the years I have owned PC's.

What a joke!

You have to turn off the Admin password. Here is how you do it:

Turn on the computer and continue to tap the F10 key until the black screen with MS-DOS appears. Be patient (it can take up to 5 minutes). After awhile a screen will appears with option tabs. Arrow over to Security and select Admin Passwords and turn off the password option.

Turn off security updates? Then the next thing you know, some Russian is running your computer from his basement in Europe.

It happens, because they’re attempting to do that 25/8.

I have two boxes. One is Linux. One is W7 and will stay W7 until I cannot use it any more. I keep it to continue to use certain legacy programs that date back to W95 on which I rely. I have tried to ease over into modern programs but the boxfuls of bells and whistles makes them entirely too top heavy.

I’m retired so it’s just the home computer for me.

Should I get a Mac?

I haven’t noticed any problems lately, but Mac users seem pretty happy.

Earlier this week, Outlook was unable to open my data file (*.pst) or even Start Outlook.

After two days of pulling my hair out trying to create a new PST file and a bunch of reboots, Outlook gave a few hiccups then launched just fine.

Scary!

I think I’m going back to Windows 7. Thankfully I still have a fully programmed W7 hard drive I can pluck back into the tower via a hard drive tray. Every time MicroThief updates W10 they screw up something.

Microsoft is now a defacto Indian company.

So, all those scammers who call you from Calcutta to offer help with your computer problems really do work for Microsoft after all?
