"NEVER be the first to update."
I have a new HP laptop (American company - whole dang thing made in China -disinfected everything from the shipping box to the cables) which necessarily came with MS Win 10. I'd held off on upgrading - stayed at Win 7.

One reason was the enforced automatic updates given Micro$oft's serious update errors.

I did find under Windows Update, maybe advanced settings, a setting to delay an update up to 35 days which I selected.

I figure if its a bad update they'll have to fix it before I get the (fixed) update.

It might have to be reset every 35 days - I'll check. If so I'll calendar a reminder to do so before the next batch of updates.

It is under Windows Advanced Options and says it will only hold off for 35 days and then updates must be allowed before allowing another 35 day (maximum) delay in updates.

Didn’t get a BSOD, but my system locked up, I rebooted....and lost just about everything. Including a Bible program and Minecraft,

I did a reset, got almost everything back, but I had to re-download the Bible program (although i lost all my notes), and Microsoft showed that I bought Minecraft, but won’t let me reload it.

Not paying another 30 bucks to get it back.

Haven’t seen a blue screen of death in a LONG time.

I can't recall seeing a BSOD on any of the 6 or 7 Windows 10 machines I use. But I got one last night while I was watching some YouTube videos. The system took a snapshot, I assume, then rebooted itself. I went back to the video I was watching and had no problems, and the machine and its files have been okay so far.

I did pause Windows updates for a week just to be sure, based on a note I read about stability concerns on the big update coming this week.

The worst part of Win10, of course, is that home users can’t turn off updates.

Not true! Click on the "Start" icon in the lower-left corner and select "Settings" (gear icon). The last option on the window that comes up is "Updates and Security". Open that icon, and you can easily delay your updates from there.

“Delay” and “Turn Off” are different concepts.

Microsoft is now a defacto Indian company. With crap Indian quality that slows...

Hard to argue that point. Then again, I converted all my machines @ home to Ubuntu 20.04 and have been a Microsoft free home for 4-6 weeks now. Nothing I cannot do on Ubuntu that I used to do on Windows.

Same MacOS and Ubuntu.

Windows only for games not on console, like Star Citizen.

Okay, you're now on the list. Welcome!

I pinged the list at the beginning when I posted the thread, and I generally don't ping twice to the same thread. But I agree the topic of how to manage Windows Updates is a valid one.

Seems like every few months there's some disaster or another coming down the chute, and people ask, How do I turn this cr@p off? And of course the answer for the majority of users -- people with the "Home" version is, simply, You're screwed, you can't turn them off, though you might be able to delay them a little. For people with Pro there are a few better options, but they're still ultimately gonna load and install. The only customers who get to hold off updates longer are those business customers with WSUS servers who proxy the updates.

But really, what are you buying by not updating? Lousier security. It's a nasty tradeoff. So that's why I recommend that all Windows users do full-image backups often, data-only backups more often, and make sure you test the "restore" capability BEFORE the day comes when you need it! Then Windows Updates become far less frightening.

If you really want to “Turn Off” any Windows 10 updates, I suggest that you either take your machine offline permanently or install Linux on your machine. If you are online and don’t update your software, you better have some heavy-duty firewall protection between your machine and the Wild Wild West that is the Interweb.

Been there, done that.

Your recommendation is valid no matter what OS someone is running. I run Ubuntu and do full image backups weekly and daily data backups to protect myself. It's just common sense. :-)
