Indonesia’s Krakatoa volcano has erupted, lighting up the night sky with bursts of lava and ash in what is said to be its most active phase since 2018, when it caused a deadly tsunami that killed over 400 people.

Videos showing the world-famous volcano spewing a cloud of lava, ash, and smoke have inundated social media.

The seismic activity at the top of the mountain began late Friday night and proceeded till Saturday morning, according to Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

The volcano spewed thick clouds of black ash along with lava at least 657 meters (2155 ft) above sea level, the ministry reported, as it issued an orange level alert, the second highest volcano aviation warning.

I wonder if any bacteria or viruses live at the bottom of these volcanoes. I guess none could survive the heat. It’s a scientific question! :-)

Reminds me of my Jan 12 backyard view, minus the pyrotechnics.

(Our volcanoes in Batangas are kinder and gentler...(so far!)

The last time I was in Tagaytay, they wouldn’t let us go down to the lake, cuz Taal was rumbling.

So far, there have actually been 5 volcano's that have started erupting this year and there are currently 49 Volcano's in total that have had eruptions during this year, and some of them have been ongoing for a very long time...

I guess that's the reason these 'global warming' predictions aren't coming true.... Like there's still snow on Mount Kilimanjaro, the Himalayas aren't really melting any more than a normal glacier would melt, etc., etc.

You know what they say... "When volcano's happen, global warming doesn't."

The vice-mayor (?) of Talisay did so much “rumbling” that the national gov’t just said “to heck with you ALL” and arbitrarily imposed a 16 km evacuation order all around Taal.

Fortunately, our mayor’s head is screwed on well, and at least gave some of us who are in the ‘shadows’ of the hills a bit of leeway. (I’m at about the 12 km ring, if I remember correctly)

Has Greta boarded her boat to head to the scene and tell that bad volcano to stop killing us faster than her prediction?

I am in the shadow of Mount Apo. I have heard rumors, that it rumbles once in awhile. I know some people climb it, and say the weather is radically different up there, but it never snows.
Some of the resort swimming pools get their water from Apo, and it feels like there are ice chunks floating in it.
I was in Lipa City in 2018, but never made it to Tagaytay that year.

I remember when Mount Pinatabu (spelled incorrectly probably) erupted and I could see the fine ash in the upper stratosphere at sunset in Tarzana California. We had some heavy rain that year as well. I can only imagine what a monster volcano would do. The little politicians would probably use that incident as another public shutdown.

I was in the Bay Area when Pinatubo went off, but I don’t recall any ash from it. Rn

I witnessed a nighttime eruption of Taal - mind boggling! ( I LOVE Tagaytay, and the bus ride from Manila is always a blast! ) Interestingly, I have also been in Indonesia and the “Big Island” of Hawaii during volcanic activity. The last two times my wife and I wife were on Hawaii Mona Loa was erupting - I joke with my wife that the Department of Tourism in Kona might ask us to stop visiting!!!
