Amazon fires warehouse worker who staged walkout [Staten Island NY]
Associated Press ^ | March 31, 2020 | Alexandra Olson and Mae Anderson

Amazon fired a worker who organized a walkout at a New York warehouse to demand greater protection against the new coronavirus, saying the employee himself flouted distancing rules and put others at risk.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio ordered the city’s Commission of Human Right to investigate whether the dismissal was retaliatory. New York Attorney General Letitia James called on the National Labor Relations Board to investigate and said her office is also considering legal options. […]

Amazon said the worker, Christian Smalls, received several warnings for violating social distancing guidelines. Amazon said Smalls showed up at the protest at the Staten Island warehouse Monday despite a order to remain home for 14 days with pay because he had come into contact with a co-worker who had been diagnosed with the virus.

But Smalls said his contact with the infected worker was limited and felt Amazon put him on leave to get him out of the way. He said he noticed the worker looked ill last Tuesday and encouraged the person in a brief conversation to go home. …

My pop is buried at one here and he died in ‘82.

Can you imagine how he would have laughed at hearing of the hardships that the average American is going through right now ?

That’s sad. As far as McDonald’s breakfast sandwiches, I have a preference for their steak, egg and cheese on a bagel, and I don’t know if they still serve that.

I remember when they used to serve the steak, egg and cheese on a bagel. I just checked their breakfast menu, and they only serve a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel now.

It might sound a bit petty, complaining about not being able to get a breakfast sandwich all day, but what the frig? They've been making breakfast sandwiches all day, since they changed the menu a while back. They still have to cook burgers, fish, fries, and the rest of the crap they sell. And it isn't like they have those sandwiches ready when you order them anyway. You always have to wait for them to make them, and cook the home fry. Nothing's changed really. Using the virus as an excuse is pretty lame. About 3 weeks ago I went through their drive-thru and ordered two sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit sandwiches, and an order of hash browns. I had to pull up and wait for the meal to be made. No problem. I get home, throw the stuff in the oven to keep it warm while I put my P.J.'s on. I'm looking forward to those sandwiches, only to open the bag and find out that there's two lousy cheeseburgers with no onions, or pickles and just ketchup. They did manage to get the hash browns in the bag though. The burgers looked so bad I tossed them in the garbage. I called them and told them of the error, and finally got my sandwiches a couple of days later. It's pretty pathetic that they can't even get a simple order right half the time.

something tells me the threatened strike by whole foods clerks isn’t going to go too well ... sounds like they’ve already backed off from a “strike” to a “sickout” ...

Born in 1920, came from Italy in 1926, was a teen during the depression and fought in the war.

Grew up poor and guys that later would be Dons of some of the 5 families were his friends.

But his arm once on a broken mirror and the blood gushing made me terrified. I think I was about 8.

The guy didn’t blink an eye.

Had kidney infection before penicillin and lost a kidney. 2 heart attacks, 2 strokes and an aneurysm.

After the infection he told my mom in his last days that he never had a pain free day in his life.

I like to pretend i’m tough.

He would laugh at how “tough” I am :)

Real men from the greatest generation.

Thanks for putting up with me in this overly long post.

It felt good to write it for some reason.

Amazon warehouses are a horrible place to work. Warehouse jobs in general are okay or good jobs, not at Walmart.
Walmart needs to be slapped with a union, it needs to change.

"...breakfast sandwiches at 2 p.m. because of the "pandemic."

?

Are breakfast sandwiches a better medium in which COVID-19 to survive? ?

What an odd policy.

They owe me a refund for an item I returned the 2nd week of March.

I'd pull the trigger on a dispute with your credit card company next week.

This guy disobeyed company directions re: COVID-19.

Thanks...I may do that. Amazon says it may take an extra 3 weeks on top of the regular time-frame to process refunds. What horse hockey. I’ll give it a while longer, and then take the next step.

Bezos had his chance to avoid building there, when AOC fought against it. Guess he's just a slow learner.

Note to self - i organizing a walkout from the company that pays my wages, don’t break rules that were implemented to protect the health and safety of other employees...and expect it to be ignored.

No problem. I was quite glad to see you still alive and kicking.

In regards to your ‘confession’, I too am short of filling my father’s shoes.

When I find myself wondering how I’ll have the time to accomplish something or the ability, I try to remember what my parents did with nary a complaint, and without the benefit of a modern supercomputer at their fingertips.
