Amazon fires warehouse worker who staged walkout [Staten Island NY]
Associated Press ^ | March 31, 2020 | Alexandra Olson and Mae Anderson

Amazon fired a worker who organized a walkout at a New York warehouse to demand greater protection against the new coronavirus, saying the employee himself flouted distancing rules and put others at risk.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio ordered the city’s Commission of Human Right to investigate whether the dismissal was retaliatory. New York Attorney General Letitia James called on the National Labor Relations Board to investigate and said her office is also considering legal options. […]

Amazon said the worker, Christian Smalls, received several warnings for violating social distancing guidelines. Amazon said Smalls showed up at the protest at the Staten Island warehouse Monday despite a order to remain home for 14 days with pay because he had come into contact with a co-worker who had been diagnosed with the virus.

But Smalls said his contact with the infected worker was limited and felt Amazon put him on leave to get him out of the way. He said he noticed the worker looked ill last Tuesday and encouraged the person in a brief conversation to go home. …

“If you walk out... you’ve walked out.”

He didn’t walk out. He was sent home.

lol

The sign it was holding was in ebonics :)

I forget the exact horrible english but it was funny.

It will only take 10 seconds to replace the person as so many want to work there on staten island.

I got lucky and have a real job on staten island. It pays Manhattan wages.

FEW jobs pay too well on Staten Island or have room to advance.

It was Dumb to blow it.

But stupid people do stupid things.

Hi Dp...

My experience with Staten Island is very limited.

Apparently one of my grandparents is buried there. So, when we were little kids, the family (mostly from Brookly, although we lived in Newark, NJ) would go to Staten Island once a year to pay respects.

The kids, myself included, didn’t get it, acted like brats, and ran around the cars.

You can probably guess which cemetery, knowing the Island.

It was the 50’s, but the grandparent in question probably died ca. 1930, and I’d guess even then that burial plot land was cheaper in Staten Island.

“Amazon said the worker, Christian Smalls, received several warnings for violating social distancing guidelines.”

That’s the (typical) East Coast mentality.

I’m glad he got fired!

Wow there was barely Anything out here back then.

I don’t know much about the history of the island before I was born but I am curious now to know which cemeteries were already existing.

I have an idea of which ones were.

My pop is buried at one here and he died in ‘82.

I shall go find out as it has me curious.

Associated Press writer Karen Matthews contributed to this story from New York.
They squeezed a third one in at the last minute.

Cool. I kind of forgot about those days.

The only other times I passed through S.I. were when my Dad decided to visit my mother’s family in Brooklyn by going south through Elizabeth over the Goethals Bridge, driving through Staten Island, and over the Verrazano. He wanted to see the bridge. The usual, and shorter route, was through the Holland Tunnel into lower Manhattan. I don’t remember it all that well.

This is Blasioville. A kangaroo court will be convened and Amazon will be whacked.

He organized a walkout, so he walked out before he was sent home. (If I have the timeline right.)

I can’t imagine there being a time when there was no bridge. :)

I like looking at pictures of it being built.

We WOPs Poured over that bridge from brooklyn when it was built.

The Irish that were already here hated that it was built lol

I can see how you might feel that way. Have you ever seen those near of the century black and white movies of lower Manhattan, with people walking over the Brooklyn Bridge? Staten Island used to be pretty isolated.

I had cousins who moved to a new house in Canarsie. They thought it was the country.

Amazon is not taking any phone calls at their customer service number. They have a recording that tells you they can't speak to you at this time.

They owe me a refund for an item I returned the 2nd week of March. I sent it back the day after I got it, and the website shows that they received it back, and that my credit is being processed, but it's been that way now for two weeks. The credit hasn't showed up on my credit card yet. I tried to write them via the email they originally sent me when I contacted them about the return and credit, and I got a reply saying that "Amazon is focused on the health and safety of our associates and, based on regional regulations and social distancing requirements, this has resulted in extended response times."

Also found out today that the two local McDonald's here in Rome, NY are not serving breakfast sandwiches all day. I only like their breakfast sandwiches. Can't stand their burgers or their fries. The drive-thru was packed bumper to bumper, with two different lanes merging, and it took me at least 15 minutes to get to the mic to place my order for a couple of egg, sausage and biscuit sandwiches, only to be told that they stopped serving breakfast sandwiches at 2 p.m. because of the "pandemic." There are 34 confirmed cases in my county. No deaths. It was 5 p.m. when I was in line. I won't be going back to any McDonald's any time soon.
