“What, if any, are the ramifications of not filling out the census? Thanks.”

They will call you ceaselessly and eventually show up at your residence to interview you. If you decline to participate in the in-person interview maybe they start something at this point, I have not gone beyond.

My parents died just before the last census was taken, so I know that the ramifications are simply a series of sternly worded follow up letters and, eventually, very nice but nervous door knockers.

I got one, and did it online. Took 5 minutes. If I was to do it over, I would have done the paper version.

With online, you can’t proceed to the next screen without answering the current one. I did some nonsense fill-in answers to get by the questions I wanted to not answer.

I figure it might be easier to just not answer a question here and there with the paper version.

Let me throw in my complaint. The census demands my phone number, but they don’t care if I’m a citizen or not (there are no citizenship questions ).

That doesn’t make me very happy.

A few years ago I got the extended form that asked all kinds of intrusive questions. I threw it out. For a few months I received letters and phone calls that I ignored.
Then it went away.

I always do the same thing. I fill out the number of people living at my address, one, and provide no other information. Then I avoid and ignore the Census employee who comes around seeking additional info until he gives up.

The Census is a Constitutional requirement. Argue amongst yourselves. Defenders of the Constitution go first.

I found this:

If you don’t respond, you can expect the Census Bureau to follow up in person to collect the information they need. You can also face penalties of up to $5,000 for not reporting or answering the questionnaire according to census law under U.S. Code section 224.

They will pester you to death with mailings, and eventually, a visit by a Census worker who will not leave your property until you give them the information they want.

Please think this over people. The number of Congressional representatives you have is based on the census. Do you want more conservatives in Congress? Then please fill out your census form.
We don’t like the way the government spends our money? WE need more reps. who truly represent us. By failing to register we are cutting off our noses to spite our face. More Republicans in Congress is the only way to slow the giveaways. We will never stop them.
I filled ours out over the weekend. This is not the long form with the intrusive questions (The American Community Survey). It’s quick and easy. It asks for names and ages, and verifies your permanent address. That’s less information than you give them on your tax return.

As I understand, the penalty is that they will send someone to your home to try to get you to fill it out.

Forgive this long post. I got one too & I understand your frustration with your state, I really do.

If there’s no other good reason to do this, would you please think of your legacy and your future? This sounds weird, doesn’t it?

I’m an amateur genealogist and the various years’ state and federal census (1850 to 1940) has helped me find ancestors I never knew existed. It helped me trace where they lived, where they migrated and from there, I could find more information about how they lived.

Apparently, my father’s family are the descendants - FIRST generation! - of the original “Cajuns” (Acadiens) - in NE Canada, known as “French Canada” in the census from 1910-1940. Through these census, I could track the “Second Exodus” of 1850 onward from Canada to a little industrial town called Lowell, Massachusetts and then points beyond.

The history of my family heritage was completely UNKNOWN to my cousins & brothers, history that includes that we are “Metis”, that our family fought in the French and Indian War with the Indians, that there was a Second Revolutionary War in 1812, called the “Battle of Aroostook (Maine)” - make no mistake, because of the census information, I learned my family did NOT board those ships to places like the Caribbean or New Orleans - they hid in Canada, escaping the British with the Mi’kMaq & Wabanaki and settling in various towns in what was then part of Maine until the “Bloodless War”.

My father would talk about some pieces of history here & there, but they assimilated into American society. His father was forbidden to speak the French and passed this to my aunts & uncles and our history was forgotten until I began to dig - using the census information to prove the migration.

They were Quakers on my mother’s side & again, through these census records, I was able to track them from Maryland, to NC, to Indiana and then to Iowa, where my grandfather was born.

With Quakers, I had Quaker records to read as well as the state and federal census records, but the state & federal census records were easier to find & read and I could track the westward expansion of not only my ancestors but of an entire Quaker sect. I was able to piece who lived with whom, neighbors (wow, I had no idea that they knew so & so) and again, was able to trace their movements as part of the history of the Pioneers who went west. Yes, they were the Pioneers we read about in school, setting up churches as they moved on.

I get what seems like an intrusion on our lives - who’s business is it how much the monthly rent/mortgage is, who lives with us, our yearly income, etc? It burns my britches, too.

Then again, looking back, I can tell you who else will care - about 5-10 years after we’ve passed away, if not sooner, someone in our family will begin to dig away at our past and our heritage. They will seek out all they can that maybe we’ve talked about or maybe we’ve hidden away in the recesses of our minds. Search, they will & what will they find? The 2020 census won’t be available to the public for a very long time. The last census made public is currently 1940.

Will you be merely a name on someone’s tree leaving a question-marked trail? Or will you add that 3rd dimension we genealogists look for so our ancestors are more than a word, they are the embodiment of who we are today.

There will be people who’ll laugh at this post - but truth be told, I’ve been a messed up kid all my life. When I began my ancestral search, I realized that I’m the product of what happens when the ebullient Acadiens meet with ultra staid Quakers and for the first time ever, I understood so many things. There was a cultural tug-of-war going on and none of us even realized it.

The Census information gathered in those years helped me piece my own life together and heal many hurts & not just mine!

Don’t do it for the State. Do it for your kids & grandchildren, nieces/nephews that will come along after you’re gone. When names are similar or if you have two John Jacob Schmidts, these State & Federal Census help us figure out which one we’re looking at & which one we matches the research because we know where they lived, who’s in the family and we can piece it all together properly.

There, as an amateur genealogist, I said it.

Got mine.. checked in online and it was what it should be.

How many people in your home (2), ethnicity which is always fun to play with and that was pretty much it... nothing on how much you make, no phone number and all the other BS I saw in the past long page forms that I never did.

What, if any, are the ramifications of not filling out the census?

They will expose you to the chinavirus, and once you get it, you will be given the placebo in the control group.

They know who you are, and they are watching your response.

If you are a male, castration, if you are female, nipple removal, if you are a trans, you pick'em, but you gotta cut'em yourse'f.

Good luck with that knife, but it's better just to fill out the form, it will only take about 10 minutes, and I won't watch.

Last time I just answered the number living at the residence and ignored the other questions about income and religion and health. They sent someone out in person 3 times, but since I work for a living no one was at home. They left cards though. I called the numbers on the card and the voicemail was either full or not set up to take messages. The other direct number to the regional director just rang off the hook in the middle of the day, so I eventually hung up. Never heard anything more from them.
