A 69-year-old Bayonne man hospitalized since early Sunday said he’s frustrated he is still waiting on test results that will confirm a suspected case of coronavirus.
But Albert “Al” Ammarito said he believes the anti-malaria drug he has been taking since Tuesday appears to have eliminated his fever and relentless dry cough.
“If you were to look at me today, I am 100 times better than I was yesterday,” Ammararito said in a telephone interview Friday evening from his bed in an isolated room at Jersey City Medical Center. “I am feeling fine.”
Hydroxychloroquine, the decades-old medication used to treat malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, was the focus of President Trump’s remarks at the daily press briefing Thursday and Friday. Trump called the drug a “game-changer” in the fight against the pandemic. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, clarified that the drug would need to go through clinical trials before the federal government could determine whether it was a safe and effective treatment for COVID-19.
However, hospitals and physicians have been administering the drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine as permitted for off-label use since the fast-spreading virus is expected to soon overwhelm the nation’s healthcare system.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. All the talking-head “expert” skepticism on CNN can’t change the fact that real patients and real doctors on the ground are getting good results with this combo. Looks like Trump is going to be proven right... as usual.

Remdesivir is a proprietary experimental drug developed by one major medical company, Gilead Science. It has not been approved for use at all, but is being clinically tested, apparently sponsored by Gilead Science. Estimated cost for one month's supply is $1,000. There is a high profit potential if this drug is ultimately approved.
Is it any wonder that the drug industry is trying to slow the use of Hydroxycholoroquine to maintain a market for
remdesivir after it finishes clinical trials?
The FDA has long had a symbiotic relationship with the drug industry, which some might view as incestuous, or worse. It is possible that the FDA is complicit in delaying use of hydroxychloroquine to allow a window of opportunity for the profit from Remdesivir.
I think the unspoken concern is the shortage of quinine derivatives that may develop - as people who aren’t ill with covid-19 ask their doctors to prescribe the drug:

What if he does not have coronavirus but has some other common virus and all these years these quinine-based drugs could have cured them?
the faster he recovers, the faster a new bed opens up.
Gilead desperately wants this to be the panacea as Remdesivir was a flop against Ebola. It has shown some efficacy in treating Coronavirus diseases. It’s available for compassionate use but has to be applied for and shipped. No delay there, right?
Remdesivir’s trial results are due in April. But can Gilead produce and distribute enough medication to make a dent in this first wave?
Interestingly, Fauci mentioned Remdesivir in one of his first press conferences. He mentioned it as a possible therapeutic, but managed to forget that the evidence was “anecdotal.”
Along comes a cheaper and much more readily available drug and it’s partially dismissed as anecdotal.

President Trump himself said yesterday that he’s optimistic that Hydroxycholoroquine could be a “game changer”, and Dr. Fauci said he would like to see data collected AS that drug is used in hospitals ... no one is stopping anyone from using that drug ... ANY drug already approved by the FDA can be used ethically and legally used for any other medical purpose WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL by anyone ... it’s called off-label use, and people would be stunned at the number of off-label prescriptions they fill every day ...
