“... the NBA wins the all-important battle to be the first corporate sport to give in,...”

Well......don’t forget there’s always pay-per-view. Wrestling has made a career out of it.

“Social distancing”

This IS a very different sort of bug compared to any other communicable disease I know of that kills a significant % of its victims.

The problem is that, while I initially thought the initial reports were hyperbole, more evidence is coming in that mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic carriers can be quite infectious, for a week or more. This just blows up most everything we “know” about infectious disease control that does not disrupt society. The only avenues left are a vaccine (mass availability likely a year off if all goes well, and NO guarantee a safe vaccine & effective will ever be found) and / or testing of virtually everyone, often, and isolation / social distancing. (Even that latter is going to be a mell of a hess if a significant % of the population becomes infected.)

If testing is inadequate (as it has been so far), then 1800’s (or earlier) style quarantines are the last resort. Otherwise the disease is unchecked, and a Northern Italy (or worse) situation results.

Panic and stupidity (”let’s glass over China” - yeah, that’s the ticket! /s) only make the situation worse. A resolute determination to accept some injury / difficulty and work together, as our people did in WW2, to get through a rough patch, is most helpful.

FReeper-ostriches, I will ask you this: What about the details of how COVID-19 propagates from human to human(s) vs. the details of how flu propagates from human to human(s) makes you think COVID-19 handled like the flu (except we have no vaccine for COVID-19) will not in time infect many more Americans than the flu? What about the fatality rates (out of confirmed infections) being seen in countries where the health care systems have been overwhelmed (and even in some not overwhelmed) leads you to believe COVID-19 will not become significantly more lethal than any recent flu’s observed in the US, if handled here “like the flu” (but with no vaccine)?

Can you imagine running the injured reserve list, and bringing AAA and AA players up for 40 games because too many of the major league guys are on quarantine? You could be watching a season where it’s common to have 25 to 15 on the box-score. Even for the umpires....where are you going to find people to fill the requirements to fill in?

Yep - we’d have gone back to the Stone Age if we kept reacting like this...insanity is the ruling factor.

IMHO what the NBA’s motive REALLY is was to knock Trump’s Keep Calm and Carry On speech out of the headlines. The fact that they announced this within MINUTES after he signed off is highly suspicious.

The Pelicans and Kings still could’ve played. Sacramento is not the site of any outbreak(that would be San Francisco, and even then the Warriors could return to Oakland, not that there are any fans left)

Whether a honest motive or not....I suspect at least three clubs are in serious financial jeopardy if the rest of the season (17 games) and the playoffs are cancelled out. Maybe their humble belief is that the virus will be wrapped up by September and the next season starts up. I have my doubts over that.

In this case, the NBA draft will be an interesting event to watch. If I were a first or second year college player....I might not leave college just yet.

"A resolute determination to accept some injury / difficulty and work together, as our people did in WW2, to get through a rough patch, is most helpful."

Amen. Unfortunately, we are no longer 'the greatest generation'. Too many of us have become spoiled, complacent, and downright selfish.

Perhaps one upside to this will be to bring us back to ourselves.

The silver lining is that neither Lebron James nor the Lakers will be winning a title this year. ; )
