A painting thought to be the work of a famed Renaissance artist has been uncovered beneath centuries of dirt on the wall of a cathedral in Vienna, Austria.
Found in St Stephen's Cathedral, the large wall painting was discovered on a wall that now sits above the cathedral's gift shop.
Experts said the painting, which depicts Saints Catherine and Margaret, is the work of German artist Albrecht Dürer.
Dürer worked as a theorist of the German Renaissance and also produced many prints.

“A cathedral”? There is only one Catholic cathedral in Vienna.
Dürer's work ethic would make him persona non grata in that community.
“In 1630 it was painted over and all traces of his work were destroyed when a bombing hit in 1945.”
Doesn’t sound like much of it is left.
“It is thought that in 1505, Dürer had stopped off in Vienna, while on his way from Nuremberg to Venice. He might have in Vienna to visit his friend scholar Conrad Celtis, who lived in the capital from 1497 until his death in 1508.”
So the painting was only 125 years old when it was painted over. What in the world would impel somebody to paint over a relatively young masterpiece?
he was an artistic genius and one of the greatest artists of all time. The costume he is wearing is typical for the period.
I’ve got pictures of ME in the early 70s wearing costumes typical for the period. They look just about out of place as do his clothes.
how much dirt that they didn’t know the painting was there?
Albrecht Durer was a fantastic anatomist and draftsman.
He was among those artists I studied back in college for reference on drawing hands. M.C. Escher was another.
Your clothes may be out of place, but his were typical of young men and nobles of the time, the late 16th century
Perhaps they just came back into fashion in the 70s where you lived, although I didn’t know anyone then who dressed like that - many women however did.
You read that wrong!
I’ve got pictures of me in the early 70s wearing costumes typical for the period, i.e., THE EARLY 1970s.
My point is you wait 50 years and everything looks hilariously outdated and goofy.

There must have been something in the painting that offended someone, as with this one...
He has a certain come hither look in with eyes...haha
He has a certain come hither look in his eyes...haha
But seriously ...artist paint a certain way to draw your eyes at specific focal points in a painting..in this painting i noticed the eyes then the lips and then the hands.
It’s the gloved hands held in tender, dainty fashion that strike me.
Was he a poor student of anatomy, or was his right thumb broken/malformed?
I know that I can’t put my thumb in that position without breaking a bone.
Good catch! I can about do that position, but it really awkward and uncomfortable. The more natural position is with the thumb of the right hand in the crook between the left thumb and left index finger.
I’ll bet he did that to see how many people were paying attention throughout the ensuing centuries!
Perhaps the buttock shaped mountains..outside the window..give us a clue as to what is on his mind?
