Which makes the Holy Family temporary political refugees, but not geographical ones. Both Egypt and Judea were provinces of the Roman Empire. The equivalent today of "fleeing" from Louisiana to Texas to escape some or other bad situation.
They fully intended to return to Judea...not emigrate to Egypt permanently.
There is nothing in the Hebrew indicating means or affordability. The King James reads: “And if she be not able to bring a lamb”, etc.; the Hebrew “day” refers to ability, and “yad” means a hand.
I admit speculating on the availability of lambs at the time Jesus was presented to the temple; after all, the Romans did make things chaotic due to the census edict.

When the Holy Family traveled to Bethlehem, they were under the edict of the government. The were not fleeing anything. Therefore, they were not refugees.
When they fled to Egypt they were on the lam. To compare the Holy Family to the hordes bursting upon the borders of the West is a naked attempt to shame people who share the quite reasonable view that the number of aliens entering the U.S. should be restricted, and only those who have been vetted should enter.
When Leftists make that comparison (accusation), they leave out the part where the U.S. admits a MILLION legal immigrants every year, as well as God knows how many refugees.

Later the Holy Family became ‘refugees’ because of hit squads being after them by a tyrannical politician (Flight into Egypt fleeing from Herod) and later returned and resumed their lives (Joseph was a skilled carpenter and Jesus became one for the next 30 years).
