In a theme park parking lot at night, a worker sleeps in her car.

You’re not supposed to see them like this, their polyester prince costumes unbuttoned and backpacks hanging from the shoulders of their colonial period dresses.

Flip flops on, lunch boxes in hand, legions of workers stream into an employee parking lot at Walt Disney World, weary from another shift of making magic at the world’s busiest theme park.

This is the place where the pixie dust loses its sparkle.

It’s where the low-wage workers who power Orlando’s tourism machine leave the attractions, hotels and eateries and fade into a community that doesn’t have enough affordable housing, public transportation or opportunities in industries with higher-paying jobs.

A year after a landmark decision by Disney to raise its minimum wage for about 40,000 union workers to $15 an hour by 2021, many of those employees are better off. By October, the number of unionized workers earning more than $15 an hour had more than quadrupled to 13,057 compared to August 2018, according to the Service Trades Council Union.

But people earning near the $15 mark, long considered the gold standard for a living wage, still find their paychecks barely cover the basics — so they move farther from the attractions to find lower rent and make difficult decisions each month about whether they can pay overdue medical bills or buy enough groceries to feed a family.

They’re people like Gabby Alcantara-Anderson.

I’m a homeowner with a 2016 vehicle, making less than $15/hr, which I consider plenty to live on. Tobacco and alcohol are why most low wage employees can’t survive, and to some extent Starbucks habits.

Those people are weird. I’ve met some when I lived there. It takes a special kind of person to be absolutely in love with dressing up in those costumes and they really do love what they do.

she hasn’t been able to stay on her meds consistently...

Boy that’s rough. I will pray that things work out with what seems to be a LABYRINTH of hoops and jumps to get insurance to approve.

And YES it is very hard to get the good stuff (oxy, roxy, perc...) since doctors decided to become street level drug dealer.

But GOOD GOD if you arent someone who needs them who is!?!! What good does a benzo do!?!?

I am glad your wife and enjoy some foods, like cheese cake filling :)

You both sound very tough.

Had I written that post in the same situation you would have read “why us” between the lines 2 dozen times!

i’m a whiner :)

God bless both of you and expect a PM asking how the wife is every now and then.

It’s somewhat of a (dysfunctional) family of friends here and it matters to me how those I get to know a little are doing.

ciao!

To his credit, the cook mentioned in the stories is taking culinary classes so that he can go on to be a (presumably) better-compensated chef.

They’re people like Gabby Alcantara-Anderson.

No they're not.....The reason Gabby is sleeping in her car is because she's so fat, she can't get out of it........She's stuck!

Current ticket prices for the park are between $109 - $129.......and it draws more than 50 million visits a year. Seems to me they could afford to pay their employees more......
