I have been looking for a list of proposed station locations for implementation of Enhanced LORAN.
Anybody know where to find that? My searches all wind up with demonstrations of the signals from four or five years ago and nothing newer. I had assumed that it wouldn't need as many stations as LORAN C but I can't find anything about the requirements.
The Coast Guard ran the Loran A and C programs along with the DGPS. Maybe they can help.
Been a few years for flying and sailing for me, but is LORAN still in use?
The loran may still be used for navigation, but I have had no problem using my I phone GPS on the Tennessee River System with my small sailboat and it does fine describing my locations with graphic pictures and landmarks..
Pretty sure it was taken down. I recall one station in ME(?) failing in the 1990s, and with GPS accuracy surging, the cost/benefit of repairing and maintaining LORAN was no longer justifiable.
It’s dead, Jim.
My last sailboat was destroyed by a hurricane in 2016, but I had not used LORAN for ages. I was using GPS navigation.
You are better off than I am. My time was about 50 years ago now. We used it to locate our LST, but the OX and 1st class quartermaster took morning and evening fixes when they could to confirm where we were. My most clear memory of it was that it positioned us 50 miles closer to Okinawa than we actually were as we approached from the North. It was nice that the error was not in the other direction.
The only (very minor) advantage I can see is that LORAN will not be degraded a la GPS in the case of military action...however, anything using LORAN for navigation shouldn’t care about GPS degradation anyway.
That’s Loran C.
Loran E paused when Obama was elected, but it was supposed to be implemented as a backup to and more electronic warefare capable alternative to GPS.
Because GPS appears to have been successfully spoofed at sea.
“LORAN now useless and ridiculous. “
Trump says otherwise.
There should be an alternative to GPS other than a sextant.
OK, but LORAN could also be spoofed; and almost no one can use LORAN now.
I certainly don’t believe that the U.S mil is dependent on it, 1960 tech.
We have GPS on our boat along with the chart plotter. Works well for us.
Then again, we were cruising down Skull Creek behind Hilton Head and GPS had us 100ft to the west on land. Depth finder had us in 25ft of water. As the GPS straightened itself out, it was interesting to watch the boat moving sideways on the chart as we went forward.
Yah , totally useless to have a backup to GPS that doesn’t rely on satellites thst are vulnerable to attack.
Russia still operates their hyperbolic navigation system, guess they must be reslly dumb.
