Apple announces the 16-inch MacBook Pro with a brand-new keyboard

Apple has finally announced the launch of the 16-inch MacBook Pro — after the longest and most convoluted series of rumors and leaks since the original iPhone. Starting at $2,399, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is available today through apple.com and the Apple Store app. The overhauled design comes with a brand-new keyboard, a higher resolution display, and a separate Touch ID button. And with a similar price tag to the MacBook Pro 15 it has now replaced, there are no nasty surprises in terms of cost.

The device has been rumored for months, but as recently as the end of October it was thought that Apple had pushed it back to 2020. In the end that proved false. Also wide of the mark was a decent chunk of the laundry list of possible features and specs the rumor mill kitted the device out with; in the end, many of these failed to come to fruition.

Still, for some Mac fans the news that the failure-prone butterfly keyboard has been replaced will be music to their ears. Apple had been forced to revise the butterfly design multiple times since its inception in 2015, yet had still been unable to shake consumer disappointment with its shallow travel and often-sticky keys. It will be hoping the new scissor-switch design — they’re calling it Magic Keyboard of course — brings with it much more satisfaction and positive press.

And big news: There’s a physical escape key. At last!

As well as that, the larger, higher-resolution display (3,072 × 1,920) is a definite step up from the 2,560 × 1,600 resolution found in the old 15-inch model. Although it’s not the OLED display some had hoped for, that’s perhaps unsurprising given Apple is rumored to be working on a superior mini-LED screen that could debut as early as late 2020. It does have a higher pixel density of 226 ppi, Apple said.

It was originally thought the 16-inch MacBook Pro would exist as a high-end MacBook Pro separate from the 13- and 15-inch models (in the same way the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max are significant steps up from the iPhone 11). This belief was gradually replaced by the idea that the 16-inch MacBook Pro would instead take the place of the MacBook Pro 15, offering more to distinguish it from the 13-inch variant without going so far as to be a distinct, ultra-high-end model in its own right.

In terms of performance, Apple has also pushed out some big improvements. Though it still features the same options for 6-core or 8-core Intel processors, the new MacBook Pro does feature new graphics cards from AMD. The AMD Radeon Pro 5000M-series cards are the first 7nm discrete graphics cards, based on the Navi architecture featured in AMD’s latest desktop cards.

Holding all this together is a new thermal system, which Apple says is the “most advanced thermal architecture ever in a Mac notebook.” The new system supposedly results in 28% better airflow. Also features is a larger heat sink and bigger vents, which Apple says can help the system sustain “up to 12 more watts during intensive workloads” than the previous model. You can also configure the laptop with up to 8TB of SSD storage and up to 64GB of RAM — both of which are firsts for the MacBook Pro.

Well, I would hope it has a brand new keyboard!
At the prices they charge I wouldn’t want a used one!....................

LOL...I’m still using my old 2009 13” Macbook Pro. Upgraded the hard drive several years back and maxed out the RAM.
The problem is there are no iOS updates past El Capitan for it..LOL
Still works great though for just plain old web browsing and getting email. I mostly use it in my shop to access vehicle data, order parts, etc.
The one thing I always like about that old machine is the keyboard. Even though it’s old, it still works, and feels way better than any of the ones that Apple was putting in the 2015 and new stuff.
Maybe it’s time has come to retire the faithful, old gal and go for an upgrade to this shiny new one... I say that every time and never do...LOL...may have to swing by an Apple store and check it out.

Who? Who but Apple fanbois will pay this price? And before I get flamed, just know I am an Apple fanboi. I like Apple. But this is exhorbitant.

As long as it works for you, you really don’t need to upgrade. . . But do so, if you want to.

I’m still using an older MacBook as well, I believe something from 2012-ish, the thing I like about that generation is they still use the MagSafe adapter. Having a easy breakaway adapter has save me a many occasions, I’m worried about the new ones taking the expensive laptop to the floor with it.

especially considering you can get a really powerful windows laptop for around $400 or so- then format it and put linux on it- or something- I’m not seeing the advantage to an apple computer? Is it more powerful or something? What more can it do that a cheaper windows computer can’t? I’ve never really understood the draw of apple at the prices they charge? I could see the draw if they too were around $400-$500 or so- Are they better at graphics or something? Their apps don’t seem to be much of an advantage over windows apps? Less viruses maybe?

Was there something wrong with the last keyboard introduced in 2017?

Maybe they can call this the Southpark or Mr. Garrison Keyboard after this “Scissors” keyboard.

I can take or leave Apple and that is a pricey box.

Earlier this year, the engineers all got new laptops to their specifications.

One of those people for whatever reason simply doesn’t use a 4000 dollar super duper laptop. It collects dust in an office.

It’stoo much trouble to take home apparently and use a VPN. Raising a fuss and being allowed (reluctantly) to install the same VPN on a home PC is more sensible.

Mind blowing.

If that works for you, then there is nothing wrong with it.

However, I have 4 kids and have gone thru many, many of those “$400 laptops”, each of which lasted, at most, 18 months - until I finally bit the bullet and one-by-one got them all Macbooks (Airs usually). Each Apple has so far lasted between 3 and 6 years, and they all still going strong -

As a software developer I used windows machines (Dells mostly) for better part of 20 years, and also made the switch to Apple for myself - yes, you pay more, but the darn things just work better in almost every way for me - and last one I used for 5 years (high-end MacBook Pro), sold it for $900 when I wanted to upgrade to a newer one - they hold their value, unlike cheap ones - never had a non-apple laptop worth a nickel after 5 years before, if it was even running (most didn’t last that long).

Probably still cheaper to have a series of cheap ones, but when you factor in the constant drain on your time to move from one machine to another, reinstall software etc - I think you come out ahead with the Apple machines.

If all you do is use the internet, send email etc - almost any machine will do what you want, but I for one could never go back.

Yep. It’s saved mine from going to the floor so many times I cannot count. That was one of Apple’s best little inventions on those older machines. And one they should of stuck with, IMHO.

For some of us, Bill Gates might as well be Satan. I hate Microsoft with a passion. I remember when I first switched from Windows to an iMac. The list of terms and conditions for Apple was reasonably brief and made perfect sense. Things like, you can’t steal their intellectual property. I went back and re-read the Microsoft terms and conditions for contrast. It went on forever with all manner of “sell your first born children” totalitarian conditions.

No thank you.

For those of us that detest Microsoft like the plague and can’t do Linux, it doesn’t leave much choice.

In fact, I would say the single only downside with Apple is the cost — which also includes all the proprietary devices you have to buy from apple due to the lack of 3rd party support.

What do I get for all that money? I get machines that work exactly as planned almost forever without fail. I get reasonably bug-free software that works wonderfully. The only thing I hate about Apple is the constant updates. I really wish they would get on a monthly update schedule instead of pushing updates every week. Drives me insane. But I just ignore them, so whatever.

Bill Gates is sinister evil, Satan personified. I hate him and I hate his lousy products.

Hence, Apple. I am extremely pleased with Apple products. I have gone all in — workstation, laptop, tablet, and phone — and I will never go back. Never.

Microsoft is Hilary Clinton, Karl Marx, and Adolph Hitler all rolled into one. Puke.

If I was flat broke or Ebenezer Scrooge, I would steal an Apple laptop before I would go back to Evil crappy Microsoft.

Well i dunno, I’ve been using a cheap one, dell, since 1998- the only thing that broke on it was one key fell off, and the old dialup adapter connection got bent/broke, so can’t plug dialup line into it anymore- but oh well- don’t use that anyways these days- (That i admit was a lousy design just waiting to break off-) but everything still works great- still using windows 98 second edition on it lol- hope i never have to reformat it as I don’t have the disks anymore lol-

Desktops I’ve had for decades- although one did crap out on me- after i left it in a cellar for a year and 1/2- Think the motherboard died due to moisture- and i am not skilled enough to replace a motherboard-

Generally things like power supply go bad, sometimes ram- sometimes video card- but these are easy to replace- In laptops it’s a little harder, but still not that bad-

The keyboard issue was not a big deal either- you can get replacement keys- The newer laptops are better these days- the old ones the keys were kinda cheaply made-

I dunno- i don’t do a lot- some gaming, and photoshop- and photography, but that puts a pretty good strain on the computers- and they’ve lasted pretty well- What repairs were needed have been simple- not too costly- but yeah, if something like the motherboard goes- or the processing unit- CPU- then yeah, it’s a problem for most- and they would likely buy new/replace-
