Spreadsheet Day is celebrated every year on 17th October, The plan of celebrating this day came about in February 2010, when the significance of spreadsheets in the day to day business works, and in fact, living became obvious to its inventor. Since 2010, Spreadsheet Day has become a day for celebrating both the pros and cons of working with spreadsheet software. These Spreadsheets are very easy to use, and it helps you balance your budget, in preparing shopping lists and in keeping track of most important days and people.
History of Spreadsheet Day Spreadsheet Day is celebrated' on 17th October as that is the date when VisiCalc, the first spreadsheet program for Apple II was released in the year 1979 and the process of computing and managing massive amounts of data became smooth and easy. Dan Bricklin of Software Arts developed VisiCalc, and it was then produced for distribution by Personal Software and marked the change of Apple IIs from a usual computer machine into an available tool for business. I can't imagine what life was like before computer spreadsheets. There has to be some permanent upward shift in GDP brought about by this software innovation.
Here is a trip down memory lane.
VisiCalc:
Lotus 1-2-3:
Quattro:
And, the reigning champ, Excel (without the horrid ribbon):

Where’s “Jazz”, Trapeze, Twin, Improv, AdamCalc and Resolve?
I just uninstalled Quattro Pro ... again, it gets installed with WordPerfect X8.

Microsoft Multiplan was my first exposure to electronic spreadsheets. Followed by Quattro Pro for a few years in the early 1990s.
In the mid 1990s I switched to Excel and never looked back. I have gigabytes worth of Excel spreadsheets in my work files. Can't imagine getting my job done without them.

I had an Osborne and I think that the spreadsheet was Supercalc.

MS Multiplan.
I was certified as a Sylk programmer.
Should have followed my uncles’ advice and chased women and bet on horses.
Would have come out ahead.

SuperCalc was Computer Associates. After Osborne Computer went under, Adam founded Paperback Software, and his flagship product was a clone of Lotus 1-2-3, over which Lotus promptly sued.
I forgot to mention CalcStar, which was a spreadsheet created by MicroPro, of WordStar fame.

I am not kidding when I say that spreadsheets have made life better for all of us. Think about it...hundreds if not thousands of calculations being automated and displayed in real-time. Anyone with a basic knowledge of math can crank out incredible analysis AND some good graphics. As long as there isn’t a math error....

In 1979 I was responsible for preparing a budget for a major hospital with a pencil on 14-column paper. I now work for a similarly sized health-care company with sophisticated software. The process is the same, but it takes much longer and isnt nearly as accurate. And I have MBAs doing it! The more things change, the less they improve.
