Cashier arrested using 'photographic memory' to steal credit card information of 1,300 customers

A store cashier in Tokyo been arrested on allegations of stealing the credit card information of 1,300 customers using just one tool -- his memory.

A crime committed only with the help of a photographic memory would be one of Japan's more unique cases of credit card theft -- but certainly not the biggest. In 2016, a group of thieves used about 1,600 forged cards to withdraw money from 1,400 cash machines across Japan. In just over two hours, they stole $13 million.

I worked many years for a friend with an exceptional memory.

Once we needed the serial number off a piece of equipment, pulling out my note pad, he says, no need, I'll remember it!

For fun and extra profit, he would come in early to review the invoices and he was very good at it.

I don’t understand people. Why didn’t he just fly to macau or some closer casino hotspot and count cards and earn his money the old fashioned way?

Even in Japan, the people that he would steal from are kinder than the outliers at Macau.

One must pick ones battles!

Had a classmate at USNA with photo memory.

He’d read the book the nite before a test and then write down the applicable examples in the text book substituting in the “new” information during the test.

The only problem he usually had is when he was asked to work something he hadn’t seen on the blackboard and actually think for a change.

I recall reading about a card counter, also IIRC head of the Pacific Exchange? He had to wear disguises and even then they would spot him and throw him out.

In Macau, they might cane him?

Casino’s have hundreds of eyes watching you and everyone else’s moves and are specially training to catch card counters.

Count cards and you will get caught.

That’s interesting, my friend with the memory was not exceptional at the technical problems of our work.

I never understood that?

Is there some bright neon sign I missed, the house ALWAYS WINS in the end?

How can it be wrong to keep track of played cards?
Only slow learners allowed?

It’s hard to be a card counter these days. They have increased the number of decks and watch the players carefully.

A while back, I spent some time with a card counter in Monaco. He didn’t do it full time. He was very smart and he could do it easily but did not do it for a living. He didn’t have to.

He played a few hands and, of course, won. After a while he handed me what he had won and said put it on either red or black.

Being timid, I put half of it on red. Yes, red won. Even half of it more than paid for dinner - but I think my friend would have been happier with the entire loss or the entire win.

I worked with a brilliant Brit with a photographic memory. His office was the messiest place you have ever seen — huge stacks of papers everywhere. Zero filing. But if we were discussing a technical problem and he needed a reference resource, he’d go to one of the many stacks and in seconds find the paper in the stack. It was the most amazing thing. He was also a wonderful jazz clarinetist, a humorous raconteur, and wrote amazing doggerel without any editing. It would just flow off his pen in final form.

Me, I try to count cards when playing Hearts online and once about half the cards are out I’m done for. Knowing when a suit is all played out is the key to winning (and figuring out what hands your opponents are holding).

Card counting takes more than a few hands. Was he watching the table for a time?

I know you’re just kidding, but card counters have been put out of business due to no-tolerance policies and measures like the 8 deck shoes they’re using these days. My Dad was a damn good counter and I learned from him how to hit and split with casino $$$.

The 8 deck shoes makes the math thousands of times more complicated and you will still be made to leave if they think you are winning by counting.

It’s not wrong, but the house has the right to decide who they want to play against, just like you do.

I cannot remember my co-workers names, nor my phone number but I can remember odds and ends. I have a photographic mind but light leaks in blanking out the details.
Must close eyes more......
