Teen goes blind after eating only fries, chips and white bread since elementary school

A teen in the UK who has eaten nothing but french fries, potato chips and white bread since elementary school is now blind because of vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition damage.

The boy was taken to his doctor at 14 because he felt tired. He was diagnosed with macrocytic anemia and a vitamin B12 deficiency and prescribed supplements, according to a study published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. He neither stuck with the vitamins nor changed his diet, however, and his condition worsened.Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital with reported vision loss.According to the BBC, Dr. Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said: "His diet was essentially a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day. He also used to snack on crisps — Pringles — and sometimes slices of white bread and occasional slices of ham, and not really any fruit and vegetables.

"He explained this as an aversion to certain textures of food that he really could not tolerate, and so chips and crisps were really the only types of food that he wanted and felt that he could eat."For those not familiar with the British vernacular, chips are french fries and crisps are potato chips.

Re: Vitamin A.

On the other end of the consumption spectrum:

I remember reading about an Arctic expedition that ran out of food...killed a polar bear for food. Turned out okay for those who ate the muscle meat...not so good for the ones who shared the liver. They died. There is so much vitamin A built up in livers of animals that consume certain fish that their liver is highly toxic to humans.

i had a blood test a month ago that was very good (maybe more than a month? but not by much)

i don’t know if they tested for A. My D was a little high so i cut down on supplements

but my eyesight is going to hell (not blind, just not as good vision. could be age related)

don’t know if i should start up taking A again but that probably wont work for certain kinds of issues, i assume

i have no clue :)

Yes, too much vitamin A is toxic.

I hear that eating just 1 oz of polar bear liver can kill someone.

Are you British or have you ever been to Britain? It was a joke. And I think anyone who has spent any time there would have gotten it.

Sympathies to you, I have mostly outgrown it now but I come from a family of picky eaters. And we were stubborn also and perfectly willing to not eat anything if it wasn't what we wanted. I guess most others have not had to deal with that type of thing. My dad is still a very picky eater while 25 years eating food prepared by other firefighters cured me.

When I was a teen, I rode my bicycle approximately 300 miles a week year round, and had to eat so much to supply the energy that I needed that I got enough nutrients to stay healthy despite my pickyness. But when you need to eat two or three times what most people do to maintain your body weight and maintain that type of activity level... the majority of your calories almost by necessity have to come from carbohydrates. Your digestive system has a difficult time processing that much protein and fat. Fortunately I did like a wide variety cafeteria type foods. I drank literally a gallon of milk a day, and who knows how many pizzas that I ate.

My drivers Education instructor was the wrestling coach and when we graduated from that class we all went to a lunch time pizza buffet and had a contest to see who could eat the most pizza. I was 135 pounds and skinny as a rail but ate 23 large slices. The nearest competitor was our teacher but he was several slices short of that. I used to run the 3 miles home from school every day and the pizza kind of wanted to come up. Then I went for a 40 mile bike ride and had no problems other than having to drink more water than normal.

Think of it as pulp in your orange juice. Some people don’t are and other buy the pulp free type. What’s his level of tolerance? Most folks will drink oj with the pulp if that’s the only kind. Never known anyone who falls on the floor with convulsions if there is pulp.

So, what’s this idiot’s tolerance level? Is he a weirdo strange kid in other areas and behaviors? Come on, he’s going blind and won’t even take medical supplements? Chalk him up to weird in all areas. One would think his parents would have done something about his diet before this. His parents should have stood over him to make sure he took his supplements.

I knew a weird kid who wouldn’t eat anything green (?) and wouldn’t touch anything on his plate if two items were touching. That eliminated any sauce or gravy in case it spread. Rice and corn was also pretty much off limits in case they rolled onto something. He was just plain weird in all areas of his life.

Our nephew’s boys refuse to eat anything but steak. They came for a visit but after three days of weirdness and whining about not being able to eat anything I gave them, and we shipped them off to another aunt to deal with. Sorry, kid, I don’t play that game. You will eat your veggies and go outside in the sun and fresh air here.

Knew a gal who was vegetarian. Thing was she’d order pepperoni pizza and toss the meat in the trash. EXCUSE ME?!? How the heck is that respecting the animal??? So full of herself and full of bs.

I loved when she ate some pork ‘n beans and loved them. It was a while before someone explained what those white cubes in it were.

Don’t drink alcohol and breast feed. I don’t care what the charts show how many hours it takes to get out of your system. Those charts say 2 hours but that is WRONG. I’ve seen it first hand when the mother breast feeds the next morning after partying and the poor baby gets zoned out.

I think this is epidemic and it’s not on routine blood panels.
Also, the so-called normal range for Vit D is too low for general health, immune system, cancer prevention, etc.

OK, I refuse to eat anything but Filet, Lobster, and expensive Belgian style wheat beer.....then I eat what's in front of me.

Do you take an eye support vitamin or get enough nutrients like lutein?
It’s not macular degeneration?

A friend of mine went on a no fat diet.

He lost weight. He also developed an arrhythmia.

The Truth is “In all things moderation.”.

That Is almost always the best advice, especially with your diet. Virtually everyone that I have ever known who adopted some weird philosophy that governed what they ate has had problems. There is so much fat and oil in almost everything that it is pretty restrictive if you try to cut out all fats. The same is true of trying to cut out all carbohydrates, and if you cut out all proteins you will eventually die. It is pretty hard get enough proteins in the types you need if you cut out meat, fish and dairy. I have know a lot of unhealthy vegans.

Of course the biggest fad right now is cutting out almost all carbohydrates and I have know a bunch of people who have had a lot of problems from that. Regardless of what people think now about what previous generations in our culture believed was healthy eating, they tended to make better choices than people do now.

I know that it is a sacrilege to those who believe in cutting out carbs, but the much maligned “food pyramid” at least ensured better diversity in peoples’ diets than all the faddish nonsense that people believe these days. If you want to increase your chances of getting sick and dying, there are not a lot of better ways long term than cutting out the nutrients and fuel that your body thrives on.

That old Pyramid will be back in vogue one day again. And you’re right, it’s saner than most of today’s fad diets.

You can get the nutrients you need on a Keto diet. Again, you can eat fruits and vegetables on Keto.

I eat a lot of avocados (yes, it’s a fruit), and strawberries (which are low-glycemic), and I eat plenty of power greens, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli.

There is no essential carbohydrate, there are essential proteins and fats. You can get all the nutrients you need without having eat more than 20 grams of carbs a day.
