(vanity) Does the latest shingles vaccine work? Advice on shingles.

Brother just got the shingles (high stress life caught up to him). It's limited to a small area but it smarts a lot.

Once it clears up (weeks? months?), he's thinking of getting the latest vaccine (me too). Has anyone taken it?

Any advice on how he can get through this?

L-Lysine is an amino acid that is very effective against shingles outbreaks. I have relatives who swear by it. You can get it online or any health food store.

You have to take a pretty large dose for several days, though, for it to clear it up. Helps alot with the pain.

Yes, had them twice in younger years and they were stress related.

Took first shot a while back and taking the second shot in another month.

For me, it is the flu shot that knocks me down.

The doctor said I could get it again and recommended the shot. I’m going to punt and say “ask your doctor.” :)

I’ve been researching this lately for myself. I’ve read that there is some possibility of having a life-threatening reaction. Given what shingles did to my dad (his Dr said it was the worst case he had ever seen, and it kept him on pain medications for years), I’m still going to get the vaccination (maybe tomorrow), but I’m going wait around afterwards in case I have a negative reaction.

There are two major brands of shingles vaccine. One uses fetal cells, the other doesn’t. Something to research before using.

I hope your brother has been to a doctor and is getting treatment

Do not let shingles run its course naturally, because the pain can last for months or years afterwards. - Tom

My mother is still taking steroid eye drops after contracting shingles 8 years ago.

I got the shingrax vaccine in the spring. She’s been thru hell. Anything to avoid that.

I was on a waiting list for months & one day I went to Kroger to pick up a prescription for my husband & they said, ‘Do you want your shot?” I also got the MMR vaccine that day.

First shot - sore arm. And I was just tired and felt run down all day the day after.

Second shot -sore arm. The next day I was just exhausted - slept for about 15 hours. No apetite and was nauseous after trying some chicken soup. That’s my story anyway.

At least I’ve got this new warning device. My face where the rash was starts to tingle when I’ve been gardening in the heat and humidity too long.

yoiu may have had shingles or chickenpox and show a blood titer. But the virus sits in your body and can cause flare ups.

Bit like herpes.

If you had it you most likely would remember unless you got it at such a young age you don't remember. I remember because I thought I had a bad outbreak of pimples when I woke up and looked in the mirror. I was probably about 9 or 10 when I got them. 67 and I still have not gotten shingles. But I probably should get the shot. Studies show that more than 99% of Americans aged 40 and older have had chickenpox, even if they don’t remember getting the disease. There is no maximum age for getting shingles vaccine.

There is no specific length of time you must wait after having shingles before receiving shingles vaccine, but generally you should make sure the shingles rash has disappeared before getting vaccinated. The decision on when to get vaccinated should be made with your healthcare provider.
