There are several studies as to what actually happened but the most credible are that Ted wasn’t in the car at all. He had got Mary Jo drunk and was planning to make out with her in the car when they were spooked by a passing police car on the island. Ted hid in the bushes while MJK tried to drive the unlit road to the bridge where it flopped off the edge of the wooden bridge and into the water.
Ted returned to the party house and asked some aides to drive him home but it was now after midnight when the ferry stops running so he jumped from the pier where the ferry stops and swam the shallow waters back to his motel room.
According to witnesses, he was calmly enjoying breakfast the next morning when aides reached him and informed him about MJK. The witnesses said he turned pale at the news.
He now had to concoct a story to explain how he could have left the party with a women who drowned without drowning himself yet could be presented in a way that did not hint of infidelity. He relied on his aides to support his story.
That’s when the neck brace showed up and the belated reporting to the police.

Born on Cape Cod myself, it's easy to see why the people of Mass. fell for the fairy tale narratives that masked the true character of Jack Kennedy and his brothers.
The Kennedy image makers were also immoral men. While the Kennedys were playing with whores supplied by the Mafia, guys like Ted Sorenson were sugar-coating Kennedy's Catholic religion, his Irish heritage, his wartime heroics from PT-109, his good looks, and financial success (thanks to his father's fraudulently-made fortune).
I was a young boy at the time. My Dad had me read the PT-109 book and I recall remarking to my Dad how shocked I was to find the curse word "bastard" in the book. After he became President, I actually memorized Kennedy's inaugural address from an LP recording. My Dad would have me recite it when relatives and friends came over to visit.
So to oppose the Kennedys in this era was akin to mocking our Irish homeland, World War II heros, and those crisp First Communion boy's jackets and angelic white dresses the girls wore.
America has long since lost such innocence, yet the bull-headed attitude of Dems in Massachusetts persists. They still internalize the long-gone oppression the Irish and Italian immigrants felt when they arrived in the 1800s. The "Victim" mentality is still strong, even as many Bay Staters have risen to become great "Victors" as inventors, entrepreneurs, and business leaders.
It is this thick-skulled logic and failure to see long term consequences that continues to do great damage to Massachusetts today. Trump-haters like Governor Charlie Baker (a Rat Romney style of Republican) actively seek to turn the Commonwealth into a Sanctuary State that invites illegals and lawlessness. MASS.ive political corruption also prevails with Dems fully controlling the legislature.
So this is exactly what great patriots like Howie Carr and Jeff Kuhner are fighting with their plain-speaking and eloquent radio shows, commentary and books.

Leo Damore speculates that when the car hit the water, Kennedy was thrown clear. Seat belt usage was not common at that time, and shoulder harnesses were not standard equipment. The inrush of water closed the door after he was clear.
The bridge was one lane, with a couple of 2 x 10’s laid flat as “guard rails”. Kennedy had been approached by Constable Huck, a teenage summer constable in Edgartown in a police uniform. Huck was authorized to direct traffic and chalk tires, not issue tickets or make arrests. He was on his way home and saw Kennedy’s car stopped on the side of the road. Chappaquiddick is a maze of dirt roads and dead ends, and tourists often became lost in those days before GPS. He approached the car to offer directions, or other help. Kennedy who was probably tipsy and in a car late at night with a woman not his wife saw a uniformed officer approaching and took off at 60 MPH towards the bridge which was meant to be crossed at about 15 tops. Huck did not follow, and probably felt sheepish about upsetting what he took to be a couple of summer tourists.

Chappaquiddick Speaks by Bill Pinney is the best book on this topic. (I have several.) Pinney is a Chappaquiddick native so he has talked to people whom the MSM didn't even know existed, and they talked openly with him. Pinney believes and makes a good case for suspecting that no one was in the car with her when it was sent off the bridge.
