Rooftop temperatures are totally irrelevant. The temperature is totally dependent on the absorptivity of the roof and the insulation effects around it. The University of Minnesota has an experimental solar absorption “rooftop” on its Minneapolis campus that regularly reaches millions of degrees.

At least there weren’t any cats or fiddlers on those roofs. Tin or otherwise.

The western part of the state is dry as the prevailing winds come from the Mexican desert. All of the southern states have prevailing winds off of the Gulf of Mexico, which is like a big hot bath tub. We have actually been having a rather mild summer so far. Highs in the low 90’s. Lows in the low 70’s. The boredom with the Texas summer is that it never changes. It can only get more humid if it rains. It is usual a hot drought for most of July and August. Finally, the tropics usually bring rain in September and the first early season cool fronts. I grow weary of Texas weather. Summers are too hot for the things I like to do.

This is what I hate about Texas summers. This was 2011.

As of August 10, Dallas/Fort Worth had recorded 40 consecutive days with high temperatures exceeding 100 °F (38 °C), the second-longest streak on record (the record of 42 days was set during the 1980 United States heat wave). In addition, the area set a new all-time hottest minimum temperature of 86 °F (30 °C) on July 26 and tied it twice in August. However, by September 13, Dallas had endured 71 non-consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 100 °F (38 °C), beating the record of 69 days set in 1980.

Oh bless their hearts. I walked into the back of my shop one day and felt the heat radiating off of the metal wall. Went and got my new laser thermometer out of the box. 126.8*

Just summer time in Texas.

The East Coast of the US gets the Gulf Stream that flows upfrom the Bahamas and brings with it high levels of humidity. Typical Summer time temps in NJ are around the mid to high 90s. Tops 100 sometimes. As I said the humidity is just the pits. It saps the energy from you, after about three days of it I find I become irritable , very physically uncomfortable and you're right, it will prevent one form enjoy certain outdoor activities(unless one has a pool). For my wife, who is an asthmatic humidity can make it hard for her to breathe.

“In other news, Kids used to use Magnifying Glasses to burn Ants.”

Back when I was a kid we made our own magnifying glasses by shooting the bottom of coke bottles dead-center with our BB guns. Result would be a conical shaped piece of glass that would burn ants, paper, arm, whatever.

They are doing this to subconsciously reinforce in everyone’s mind that Global Warming is real, which it isn’t.Even our local news is hyping up the heat wave recently, which really wasn’t that bad.

There is something to be said for dry air. The only time we get low humidity here in the summer is after a prolonged drought and the ground becomes like concrete.

About the only thing that’s a benefit, if it can be said about humidity ,is unlike hot dry air, it doesn’t dry one’s skin. Other then that it’s just bloody awful to deal with.

I just went on a one-mile walk with my wife around the block. I had to go change shirts. Now, I am sitting in my chair in a pool of sweat. Oh, how I hates it.
