A small, twin-engine plane used for skydiving crashed in the Hawaiian island of Oahu on Friday, killing all nine people aboard, authorities said. Names of the victims weren't immediately released.

The King Air plane burst into flames upon hitting the ground near the Dillingham Airfield around 6:30 p.m. local time. The airfield will remain closed until further notice, officials said.

There were six employees and three customers on the flight, said Tim Sakahara of Hawaii's Department of Transportation, citing preliminary information.

Witnesses said the plane appeared to have problems during takeoff, noticing that it was unsteady on the runway.

Never understood why people jump out of planes, but what the heck, I sunk boats.

RIP those in the wake

That is a short runway.

A waste of 9 perfect parachutes. (reference to the notion of “waste of a perfectly good airplane”)

Prayers to the family.

Home of those island runways are very short, hell some have ramps at the end to get you final lift.

It is but this one was from 1967.

I’m guessing there was an engine failure on takeoff.

King Air is a good plane.

Not good enough to overcome a likely weight and balance problem.

parachutes don’t work so well at 200 ft

Ramps slow you down REDUCING lift.

They have ramps on many island runways.
They do it on aircraft carriers too.

I used to skydive and you never felt comfortable until you were above 1,000 feet.

My buddy with a plane (RV9) defines a good landing as one where you get to use the plane again! XD

The King Air is a great plane. But with that people load, your weight and balance calculations are critical. I would guess that’s the issue here.

“Weight and balance is important.”

Understood.

But do private aircraft have a method to determine if the weight distribution is safe prior to takeoff do you know?

On the other hand maybe everyone was going to one side of the plane at once for some reason to throw the equilibrium off, I don’t know.

**A waste of 9 perfect parachutes**

Well, i suppose the pilot (and possibly copilot) may have had a chute as well.

I wonder: How heavy were the nine, and the required gear? I’m assuming that there were no plush seats aft of the cockpit. Did the plane climb too steeply and the 7 or 8 slide aft on a bare floor? But without watching a video, i would first assume power loss.
