It Looks Like 'Avengers:Endgame' Will Not Become The Top Grossing Film Of All Time, At Least For Now

I haven’t been paying much attention to this lately but today I saw something that made me wonder if Avengers: Endgame had finally dethroned Avatar as the top-grossing film of all time. The answer is no. Endgame is very close to catching up with Avatar but it looks like that won’t happen now that theaters are dropping the film in favor of newer releases. There’s just not quite enough gas left in the tank. From CNBC:
As Endgame exits its sixth week at the box office, its sales momentum has slowed so much that now analysts are questioning if it will be able to surpass Avatars $2.78 billion record.
Endgames current sales tally, $2.73 billion, is no small feat. However, The final $58 million the film needs to catch up to Avatar is not going to be easy to get, especially, as the summer box office season heats up.
Those numbers are from last week. If you include the money the film earned over this past weekend (you can see all the numbers here at Box Office Mojo) Endgame is about $47 million behind Avatar. But the film only made just under $5 million domestic this weekend. It will continue to drop as new releases like MIB International. If that doesn’t do it, Toy Story 4 opens the following weekend and will certainly dominate multiplexes. Finally, it’s only about three weeks from now until Spider-Man: Far From Home is released. At that point, I think Endgame gets knocked out for good and it won’t have made another $50 million in that time.
However, it’s possible this contest isn’t over. Endgame could get a theatrical rerelease that will add to its total.
Films are often re-released in theaters during major anniversaries or milestones, as well as part of movie-watching marathons.
Titanic got a 3D release in 2012, 15 years after its first release and hauled in $57.8 million in the U.S. Five years after that, for the films 20th anniversary, it was released again, earning nearly $700,000.
Avatar even got a second release, returning to theaters in 2010 and gaining an additional $10.7 million during that limited run.
It would not be out of the question for Endgame to do the same.
That’s possible, but keep in mind Avatar could also get another rerelease. After all, Cameron is currently producing four sequels, the first of which will be released in late 2021. It might make sense to have a rerelease of the original film in anticipation of the new releases.
So Avengers: Endgame came really close but it’s almost certainly not going to be the top film. Director James Cameron will retain his title as the global box office champ.

I wish someone could bump the intergalactic “Dances With Wolves” knock-off.

I’m relatively alone disliking it. Gay promotion and trashing of the male white heroes, as well as ending their stories. Predictable and too much time spent on everybody being depressed.

The real question is how many tickets were sold.

Im relatively alone disliking it. Oh no you're not! It went on the "Unwatchable" pile about 20 minutes in. Hollywood is nothing more than a propaganda mill where the writers suck so bad they have to plagiarize old comic books but this one rates up there at the top on the "YUUCCH!" scale.

I finally saw “endgame” this weekend....
Sort of stupid and silly...
I have no idea what all the excitement was about...

I liked it. After seeing it a second time, I liked it more, sans as you mention the stupid homosexual scene at the beginning and the female PMS Amazon scene at the end.
But I have to hand it to the writers: they didn’t just wrap up THREE movies, they wrapped up (I think) SEVENTEEN if you include “Thor,” “Captain America,” “Ant Man,” “Iron Man,” “Guardians,” “Doctor Strange,” “Captain Marvel,” and the “Avengers”. That’s some feat.

Only because Avatar was released twice.
If they released Infinity War and Endgame a couple of months from now, it would top Avatar easily.

If you watched it as a standalone movie, as opposed to a series of all of Marvel’s movies, then it isn’t surprising that you didn’t care for it too much.
Even though it was a three hour movie, they had a hundred storylines to try and wrap up in that time.

Aquaman and Ant-Man and the Wasp were the two best comic book movies of the last 18 months. Better than either Avengers movie, Captain Marvel, Panther. Better. Jason Momoa’s unexpected comic talent and the combination of Paul Rudd, Michael Pena and Walton Goggins make it so.
To: Williams
I thought it was boring. A lot of time spent on personal relationships that I only half remembered the back story too. And I agree, the whole beer belly Thor thing was a shot at people who happen to be white.
To: LS
Me, too, Larry. I liked them all. My favorites were the first Avengers and Winter Soldier. My least favorites were Thor II and Age of Ultron. Still, my least favorite here were better than most movies I saw in the past ten years or so.
Especially the war stories that are supposed to be real. Nothing ticks me off like seeing something in a movie that is supposed to be real with some late 20th Century/early 21st Century crap in it, like Pearl Harbor or Dunkirk. Or making up stuff that didn’t happen, like Churchill talking to the commoners on the Tube.

I love when FReepers piss all over each other’s personal tastes.
My favorite color is red.....10 FReepers will show up to tell me I am wrong.
That is what these movie discussions always turn into.

Through recommendation of someone on this site, my husband and I started watching “person of interest.” We are on the 5th season and will be through very soon. It is really great. Is there another series someone can suggest that is as good as this one? We get it through Netflix.

Hate what they did to Thor because he was s toxic white Male. Thor gives the kingdom to a black woman because “I’m not a leader, you’re a leader. She was never depicted as a leader.
Of course Captain America was put out to pasture and turned the Avengers over to a black guy with no powers.
It’s implied Captain Marvel is a lesbian.
The gay director appears early in the movie as a gay guy.
I didn’t like what they did to black widow or Gamorrah, either.

Thats because they are smart and are adjusting for inflation. I had some emotional moron who was somehow invested in Avatar staying number one who was infuriated when I showed him the adjusted rankings. Why do you have to do that? Just let me enjoy the rankings!

21 movies. Though it didn’t truly “wrap” them up since the next phase starts in a couple of weeks. But it bring all the stories to one place, where they will now spawn anew.
