I did bookkeeping in the early 90’s for a roofing company in Los Angeles.
Their workmen’s comp rates were 105% of GROSS wages.
I filled out the forms. I am not joking.
The tough one is the last one.
In Lancaster County, PA the roads through the Amish areas are wonderfully paved and fun to drive, with beautiful views and many turns. They are amazing to jog but you need to be alert as theres no shoulder. All-in-all they are the best rural roads Ive encountered anywhere.
Out there the roads arent called asphalt but macadam.
People envision the Amish using hand tools, but they use all modern power tools.”””
The property owner has to be on the premises & the tools have to belong to the property owner or other contractor.
IF home owner leaves premises for any reason, Amish stop working until they return.
I have friends who moved to So Missouri. They designed & built their house. At least one Amish talented guy worked on the house, but they learned in short order that at least ONE of them had to be on the premises at all times when work was being done.
The worker never missed a day. He was always ready to be picked up for the job. He started work on time, and he stopped exactly at noon-ate his lunch- and restarted work at 12:30. He worked diligently & was a very good craftsman.
Where I live in Upstate NY, with all the hardwood trees in their rural area, the Amish operate what seems to be the biggest cutting and lumber yard in the area. I’ve seen where and how they live, so I can’t imagine where their profits (which must be substantial) go to. I think much of it goes into buying more farmland. Anyway, their quality is good and prices are low.
They also hunt whenever they want to. They don’t give a sh** about DEC rules on seasonality or licenses. You are much more likely to see a deer roaming suburban back yards than the rural counties where they live.
Amish fly under the radar, and I overall respect their Christian values and their overall GFY attitude toward the government - but at some point, the statists and fascists here in NY will want to take them down a notch.
So, you don’t like the Amish & Mennonites. Actually they are more honest that any of us modern fools. They hold their status for valid reasons.
Wow, and here many of us thought income and payroll taxes were originally unconstitutional. Oh, that's right they were!
“Their workmens comp rates were 105% of GROSS wages.”
I had a steel mill client with several million in wages. They got hit with a 100% rate and it almost put them out of business.
If Trump wants to really be popular, he should propose a tariff system that is tied to the amount of benefits and wages paid to the employees. These tariffs collected could be used as foreign aid that would go directly to benefit the populace.
Apply this to Venezuela. Tax their oil and use the tax to benefit their people. This type of system needs to be implemented on a world wide basis to bring equality.
Open borders without equality first will cause chaos. (Has caused)
Mennonites are easy to join. Just noticed mennonite in the title.
There are mennonite churches all around our area.
“modern power tools.”
I’ve seen many horse drawn sprayers with gasoline motors running the pumps, spraying weed killers and insecticides.
“Actually they are more honest that any of us modern fools.”
Generally I agree. I deal with over 600 Amish & Mennonite businesses. I have been on both sides of the fence many times.
I bail them out in business dealings when they get shafted, but also have confronted them when they tried to shaft me or other parties.
They are generally naive and get themselves into trouble in business dealings with English. (The call all people non-Amish or Mennonite English)
I helped on manufacturing partnership that was getting shafted by the Bush Family Investment group they started with Frank Carlucci, the Carlisle Group, when the Amish were getting screwed out of several hundred thousand $$$$’s.
Generally the Elders are wise and make good decisions. They see the bigger picture.
Well my son.....
Please kneel.
Hominy, hominy, hominy grits.
You have received the cyber preached words and can call your self Amish
Yeah, so? Hurdles happen. Find a way to better compete.
Yeah, so? Hurdles happen. Find a way to better compete.
You already noted all the advantages the Amish have maybe you have it in you how one would compete based on the things the Amish are exempt from.
I sure am interested how someone with your insight would go about it.
Personally i’m lucky that I mfg. metal bar stools and restaurant seating and the state has yet to exempt the Amish from taxes for metal fabricating.
Then why for Pete's sake are you angsting about what the Amish are doing?! And why are you asking me for advice on how to better compete against Amish home contractors?
The reason I say something is due to the fact I have a # of friends that are dealing with this issue and I witness it firsthand.
I have sold a lot of wood to the Amish and they are very good people but my friends are good hardworking people also and I feel that they deserve a level playing field to compete. If the exemptions only apply to the Amish on their own property then everyone is competing on a level playing field off Amish property.
“Has yet to exempt the Amish from taxes for metal fabricating.”
They are exempt in ANY profession, including making metal bar stools.
They could be an attorney or Dr. and would be exempt as long as they are self employed or working for another exempt employer.
There are several excellent Amish metal fabrication shops in my area.
