Yankees dump Kate Smith’s ‘God Bless America’ from rotation over singer’s racist songs

The Yankees have taken a stand against racism for their seventh-inning stretch.

For 18 years, Yankee Stadium regularly used Kate Smith’s 1939 recording of “God Bless America” in the middle of the seventh inning. But they ditched it altogether this season, replacing Smith’s rendition with different versions of the song. Why? As the Daily News learned, the Yankee were made aware of Smith’s history of potential racism.

I used to work around a bunch of them back in TV production land.

They loved to brag about the big side money they made to us mere mortals.

When the idea of ETV sports was inflicted, we mere mortals were pretty much ordered to watch some ball games on weekends to get a grasp on replays.

I flat out said no chance. That idea never came up again.

For a few years, I was very adept at dodging the sports productions. It was a game for me. There were some other reasons I did the sports heretic thing. In the end, I won.

This is the first ever performance, from November 10, 1938, before a live radio audience. It includes the line "From the green fields of Virginia to the gold fields out in Nome," which I have never heard in subsequent versions. This version apparently comes from a transcription, made on a large disc and played like a phonograph record, so there is some surface noise, but otherwise, the quality is pretty good.

Those 70s and 80s beer ads of less filling, taste great were great.

I liked the ad for Lucky Lager from 1964:

These days, advertisers are prohibited from referring to the effects of alcohol in beverages.

In September 1943 Kate Smith headlined a marathon War Bond Drive, in which she sang like 63 times in 18 hours, to raise donated funds to support the troops in WWII. The Drive was success, raising tens of millions of dollars in one day. Sociologist Robert Merton wrote an analysis of the event as an example of mass persuasion.

It seems only too predictable that the slime balls of NYC would spurn such a signal event in the Nation’s recent patriotic history.

Maybe next they will eliminate from public memory the iconic flag raising from the debris of 9/11.

Sadly, the business people in MLB have issues: they welcome Barry Bonds, the criminal cheater and wife beater, reject affordable prices, and pretend to be politically correct. Thankfully, baseball will always attract families and historians. And MLB Executives come and go. God bless American. He does.

If I ran the PA at Yankee Stadium, I’d replace Kate Smith with Anita Bryant and get all the LGBTs up in arms.
