On April 17, 1970, Apollo 13 returned to Earth after narrowly avoiding a deadly disaster in space. This was supposed to be the third mission to land on the moon.
Astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise launched on April 11 and were two days into their trip to the moon when an oxygen tank exploded, and NASA had to abort the mission. When the astronauts called mission control to report the incident, Swigert uttered the famous quote, "Houston, we've had a problem."
Wait, I thought it was that UPS guy who said that...
Bookmarked
:-)
toally amazing ... thank goodness astronaut Tom Hanks made it back ...
If this were happening today, with a Republican President, as it was then, the media and the left would be pushing the theme of ‘can we really afford this?’, ‘Shouldn’t we be spending this money at home?’, ‘Was there negligence by the President?’, ‘What is the administration hiding about Apollo 13?’, etc. etc.

We were blessed back then to live in a Nation where our identity was to be an American. American’s going placed none had gone before. American’s doing the impossible as we had been doing since the Revolution. We came together. We were still mostly Christian. Our values were solid.
Seems like such a long time ago..

Heck, it was going on then too. Senator Walter Mondole HATED the space program and with Apollo 12 losing its camera, and then 13’s close call, that was it - the last 3 Apollo flights, 3 FULLY BUILT ROCKETS, were grounded - so that we could ‘solve poverty’.
These people have not changed a bit - the only difference now is that Trump is forcing them to show their true colors.
You’re right, of course. It’s just that the ‘volume’ is much louder now, and they are much more ideological and aggressive.
It was. Face it, you're old. :-)
Pretty good movie. I understand the microgravity scenes were shot in one of NASA’s Vomit Comets. Must’ve been really something.
If it happened today, the story would not be about the astronauts, but about diversity at NASA and that only a transgender female muslim can do the calculations to save them.
LOL. Nobody gets out alive..
Good flick made on it.
I remember it very well, I was a Junior in high school, we all watched it on television and prayed together.
I was a space geek (still am) back then and a senior in HS, and was just on the edge of my seat the whole time after the oxygen tanks puked out. I was sure those guys wouldn’t make it back. That they did is probably the greatest feat of improvised engineering and courage in the whole program to far.
Yes it was. Great cast too and while some here might not like Ron Howard or Tom Hanks, this was still a great movie.
