Notice I posted this to the cheese hole, in hopes of a couple of responses. Prove me wrong...let's see if this thread hits 100...heck 50 from the cheesehole of chat.

As a follow-up to yesterday's post : Tech Ping: Chickensoup is in Hot Water. Computer Died a Horrible Death. Need to Save Its Soul!

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3739180/posts

I am now in the market for a new computer.

Your recommendations.

I like powerful computers, money is less of an issue than configuration. This laptop is only moving between desk and home.

Got to haves: 17" screen really fast nice color Good fans and airflows removable battery usb ports 2 or 3 Ethernet port card port for camera cards and others blue tooth wifi

Nice to have CD drive Touch screen doesn't flipping matter.

Sadly I have to move to WIN 10 and upgrade office from 2003.

Your recommendations and experiences would be great.

A big bowl of chickensoup to the recommendation that I choose!

I hold on to my Office 2003 CDs like Grim Death.
LOL ... I'm still using Word and Excel ... 2001.
I also still use Photoshop 7 - 2005 vintage.
I try the latest software versions when they come out, but they're not just worth the money - lot's of money. The hell with them.

I guarantee you, not 1% of the posters know what a Digital PDP 1100 is, especially from 1981......I started with Burroughs in 1981 supported the B1000 and later A-series Mainframes, carried a 65mb disk pack around in my car with all the software I need to support someone, if I need anything else I had Mag tapes....Digital aka DEC as I knew it and Burroughs along with a whole bunch of others don’t exist anymore...

I notice a god-forsaken “ribbon” menu in one of the word processing illustrations.

Try it anyway. The ribbon interface can be disabled. I don't use it.

It's free. It's not gonna cost you anything.

I used to do Windows for 20+ years, got tired of all the crashing and walking on eggshells nuances.

Went to Mac and never looked back. Life is much easier now.

Maybe that last machine that Gateway tried, right before they went out of business?

DEC developed the RS2732 board for P2P “phone-line” transmissions. I sent my first file from Casper WY to SLC UT around September of 1983.

It was ON!

If you just want "fast", but you're not doing heavy graphics, then you want three things: A fast processor, lots of high-end RAM, and one or two large solid-state drives. If you were doing high-end graphics or intense gaming (not solitaire) you'd also need a high-end graphics card or two.

The SSD (solid-state drive) may be the real key to being fast if you aren't using memory-intense applications. The speed boost over traditional hard drives is amazing. Prices have come down a lot, so you're in luck.

Let me look and I'll get back to you. Do you have a brand preference?

I like my Asus too. 10 years old and still kicking without one problem except the battery which died about 5 years ago, normal life span. Just have to keep it plugged in. lol

Liked my HP until I dropped it. Too much for repairs. Guess I will go back to Dell. Was the first sign of illness; heart and liver.

I’m pretty sure I could resurrect a copy of my “Yellow File Cabinet” DOS from some old 3.5 floppies I have in the basement.

“I’m still using Word and Excel ... 2001.”

Ha! Good for you. When I’m using my Word, Excel, and Access 2003, I’m missing my DOS WordPerfect, Lotus, and Paradox. (P.S., I hate Bill Gates and his “bundling” of apps on new PCs back in “the day” when we were forced to use MS apps.)

There's "fast", and then there's fast. High end graphics cards (which you don't need) can add $1000 or more. Easily, if you get a quad set-up.

>>Ooh! Double-sided! Aren’t you lucky.

That’s only a single-sided floppy. You have to notch out the other side (near the label) with a hole punch, without actually notching the disk itself, to make it double sided. :)

Alienware should tick all your must have boxes quite nicely. Pay no attention to the shrinking size of your wallet.

My Christmas Dell has been a disaster. In the last two days I have spent over 4 hours and 45 minutes on the phone with their premium tech support in India, which left my too slow running computer, not running at all.

some old 3.5 floppies I have in the basement.
Not three weeks ago, I trashed three dozen old cables of all kinds (I swore I'd need that SCSI someday), plus a few 3.5 drives.
The 5.25 drives I trashed a year ago.
Hey, you never know :)
