Notice I posted this to the cheese hole, in hopes of a couple of responses. Prove me wrong...let's see if this thread hits 100...heck 50 from the cheesehole of chat.

As a follow-up to yesterday's post : Tech Ping: Chickensoup is in Hot Water. Computer Died a Horrible Death. Need to Save Its Soul!

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3739180/posts

I am now in the market for a new computer.

Your recommendations.

I like powerful computers, money is less of an issue than configuration. This laptop is only moving between desk and home.

Got to haves: 17" screen really fast nice color Good fans and airflows removable battery usb ports 2 or 3 Ethernet port card port for camera cards and others blue tooth wifi

Nice to have CD drive Touch screen doesn't flipping matter.

Sadly I have to move to WIN 10 and upgrade office from 2003.

Your recommendations and experiences would be great.

A big bowl of chickensoup to the recommendation that I choose!

What is a GPU? Is that the graphics card?

I don’t care.

It seems that all fast computers have a fast graphics card.

I keep a decent desktop at home and use a laptop for when mobility and access is needed. Can probably do both for around the same cost as a “superior” laptop...

Appy I must confess I am sloppy. I do occasionally drag my computer around the house. I just do not want to be chained to a desktop. If I left one at work, I would have to constantly update both of them

If you upgrade Office, always save your last PERMANENT license version. All new software is going RENT only with temporary license. That is a bad trend.

How do I get a big bowl of chickensoup without any recommendations? I love chicken soup, even when I’m not sick.

Most programmers I know here are using Lenovo thinkpads. They run about 4500 for the nice ones. That’s Canadian dollar though, so maybe 3500 there. That will do all your requirements and probably then some.

All your small arms questions you can shoot my way. I just need some soup!

I’ve had a near high-end Asus 17” laptop for four years, and it’s still great, even though the processor is a by now ancient 4710 CPU, and it has a 970GTX GPU. It’s a beast, it weighs 10 pounds, and I rarely take it anywhere.

It was pretty expensive when I bought it.

Here’s what I’d look for:

- At least four cores in the CPU, with multithreading (so it looks like 8 to the software)
- 1060GTX or better, or AMD equivalent GPU
- Good reviews on airflow, display quality.
- At least 500 GB, preferably 1 TB of SSD, either built in or installed afterwards
- 16 GB of memory (I put in 32, and I NEVER have memory problems, no matter how many programs are running, or with a Linux VM in the background)
- Something to watch out for: Avoid the temptation to get a completely loaded 15 inch machine, with the intention of portability and a big outboard display. It will either get hot and self-throttle, or it will be noisy from the fans.

And, despite what many complainers say, Win10 is very good and very stable on my machine, and will probably be that way on any new PC.

What I can’t help you with is which manufacturer has the best mix right now.

I’m thinking of their 8th generation i7 series with 512 Gb SSD and 16gb memory configuration.

I build my own desktop every few years so I’m a desktop guy.

I don’t want to own an orphan.

No risk of that--they've been in business for well over a decade.
