Notice I posted this to the cheese hole, in hopes of a couple of responses. Prove me wrong...let's see if this thread hits 100...heck 50 from the cheesehole of chat.

As a follow-up to yesterday's post : Tech Ping: Chickensoup is in Hot Water. Computer Died a Horrible Death. Need to Save Its Soul!

I am now in the market for a new computer.

Your recommendations.

I like powerful computers, money is less of an issue than configuration. This laptop is only moving between desk and home.

Got to haves: 17" screen really fast nice color Good fans and airflows removable battery usb ports 2 or 3 Ethernet port card port for camera cards and others blue tooth wifi

Nice to have CD drive Touch screen doesn't flipping matter.

Sadly I have to move to WIN 10 and upgrade office from 2003.

Your recommendations and experiences would be great.

A big bowl of chickensoup to the recommendation that I choose!

Windows 8 convinced me to stay away form Windows PC. Mac Book Pro beats it hands down.

I bought my 17” laptop from Tiger Direct (www.tigerdirect.com)

Alienware makes good higher end systems
Expect to spend a $1,000 or more

How important to you is graphics capability? And if you do need high end graphics, do you need it for things like 3-D modeling, gaming, watching video, or what? Becauae that will determine the the type of video card in which you should invest.

helps if you can answer how fast a GPU you need.

Laptops with fastest GPU are much heavier and thicker and more expensive. Makes a big difference in how portable it really is.

If it were me:

I would have a desktop at home and a laptop for moving around. You can use Cloud services to share files between the two.
Reason: Desktops are more powerful, easier to work on, less prone to failure like spilling something in it. It’s easier to do 2 or 3 monitors on a desktop.

I code for a living and I never spend more than $500 on a laptop. You don’t get better results by spending more if you have access to a desktop. I normally use a desktop. The laptop is for using in different places in the house like the kitchen. I use OneDrive to share everything.
I’ve noticed that people who use laptops tend to be more sloppy with them, like using it in bed.
Office 365 is the new paradigm.

Toshiba got out of the PC biz a few years ago. They are coming back though with the name Dynabook I think.

I suggest Dell Refurbished.
Have bought half a dozen refurbs - both desktop and laptop - over the last 10 years, and I have zero complaints.

Ignore the Apple fanbois. Have you looked at the HP Spectre lines? Really, how much do you want to spend in the end will govern your decision.

Personally, I'd recommend the Oryx Pro or the Serval.

I want the computer to be really fast. I have had graphics before. I just want really fast.

I play solitaire occasionally.

I’ve spent a career in the IT World, IMO, the vast majority of people don’t need a big expensive laptop....unless you are really into gaming or extensive video editing, it’s money wasted.....

Get a laptop with a reasonably new CPU and purchase as much core memory as you can afford or can fit in the laptop, then if you can afford it, go with a modest sized Solid State Drive (SSD), they are usually lightening fast....if you need extra hard drive storage, go with a portable external hard drive, I have (2) 2-TB drive which is a helluva lot of space.....

The only TRUE removable battery laptops anymore limit you to Lenovo.
It is the old IBM Think Pad, under the new name Lenovo.

The advantage is at times spent in a coffee shop and when no outlets are available. Having a second charged battery is great, unplugged from a wall outlet.

Imagine that, once in a while, spending some time IN PUBLIC with real people around.

I have one Lenovo and may buy a second. One for browsing, one for hacking the Pentagon or CIA. So if someone here has the Pentagon password ...
