The first time Calinda Lee saw the Battle of Atlanta Cyclorama, she rolled her eyes in disbelief. The colossal 133-year-old panoramic painting of the Civil War battle featured thousands of human figures soldiers of the North and South fighting, falling, fleeing, along with sundry attendants of the battlefield: stretcher-bearers, cooks, orderlies and more. Yet in the throng of faces surrounding her, there was only one that looked like hers. Only one was African American.

No more black Santas then?
No more black Hamilton then?
Let these activists cry out against all false racial depictions; they won’t even need to leave their own community.
I support historical accuracy.
However, re-painting something which is 133-years old is not a good solution. This is just another way to tear down Civil War monuments and re-tell history in a Politically correct way. I oppose that 100%.
The Gettysburg people accepted the quirk.
I predict that the Cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg at the Gettysburg Visitors Center will be next in line for a “facelift”. It’s a remarkable piece of art accurately depicting the battle. That won’t stop the enemies of history from defacing it (pardon the pun).
I’m not sure how many black faces she expected to see. Sherman refused to accept any black regiments in his army, and the Confederates didn’t allow black troops until long after the fall of Atlanta.
I saw the insides of the big round building back about 1963. I stood in the middle and the 360 degree wall around me had various scenes from the civil war. Stonewall Jackson was propelled upwards by his horse and got shot by accident by one of his own men. A tour guide explained the various scenes. It appeared to be all white guys in the paintings. Back then (1963) most everything was all white guys in the paintings of the civil war. Just how many black guys were there during the Battle of Atlanta?! Or other Civil War battles?!
The Confederates has interrogated black troops. Most of the what we now call “REMFs” in the CSA were black. The CSA ambulance Corp ( which did a great job considering ) was very integrated.
interrogated = integrated
Captured black Union troops didn’t fare well in at least one particular battle, iirc.
They “restored it” claims the Atlanta History Center’s website but I don’t know what they did to alter it since WAPO wants me to pay to read their article.
Most of what constituted "REMFs" in the CSA they called "slaves".
The article is not clear either, but it seems the article states it was ‘altered’ to reflect accurate history. I don’t care if the story is altered for accuracy or if a non intrusive overlay is done, but to actually add paint to this work seems like a bad idea to me.
More than one. Confederate killing of surrendering black Union soldiers occurred in a number of battles.
Those a-holes commenting.....
The South was not ‘treasonus’. Secession was allowed under the original deal. CSA was legitimate. Slavery was bad. You damn Yankee haters can keep it up there where y’all know so damn much more than everybody else.

None of those soldiers was going to look like her to begin with, because she’s not a man.
They moved everything to a new building at the Atlanta History Center.
