God made everyone for His purposes. Like Einstein who outside his areas of expertise was not so brilliant in useful/daily ways. Math and science is just a small portion of the ways people can be brilliant or acheive amazing things in thier lives and the world.

Yes, but the “bragging” about it is a form of snobbery.

Parents try to cushion the kids and that ends up costing them. Kids don’t learn the fundamentals because they are too focused on standardized tests.
Schools ignore the English part of the SAT too much so you end up with students that a practically English-illiterate.

Sometimes it is maturity. I made a D in the 2nd Principles of Accounting class in college. 10 years later, I got a degree in Accounting with a 3.5 GPA.

I had to re-take the 2nd Principles class. On the first exam, the students demanded a curve because the test was so hard. The professor asked “If it was so hard, how did someone make a 98?”. Everyone turned and looked at me because I was wearing a tie. “Hey, this is my 2nd time”

The military is funny. A friend graduated with a degree in Anthropology so they had her designing buildings in Iraq. I don’t know how they got from here to there.

Organic chemistry is a recipe book. You just can’t eat what you make (usually).

It was an easy A.

Still applied when I graduated in ‘90 at Pace in Manhattan.

I think the past 20 years the pace of insanity picked up.

A lot of that over the past 10.

Totally correct. I actually taught at an elite prep school in the late 70s and those students were exceptional. But I got my first college job at a Wisconsin equivalent of a Juco, and they were horrible.

Literally, I had to explain the word “emancipation.” We’re talking probably a sixth grade level of vocabulary and historical understanding.

Over the next 30 years at a pretty good private OH university, I watched student quality decline. By the early 2000s, they were really bad-—then they changed, showing more intellect but far less ability to stay focused. I had to completely ban cell phones. Then I noticed a lot of “bathroom breaks,” so before class started (attendance in my classes was “voluntary” cuz really only 2-3 kids in my entire career managed to do even reasonably well without attending), I asked who needed to go, and there would be no breaks from then on. That finally solved it.

“Not really new. Back when I was in college in the 60s chemistry profs had no problem - some classes were lucky and one or 2 people passed. Organic and solid Chem are very hard.”

Yep! Chem, math and physics is what weeded out the unsuitable students in pre pharmacy. The vast majority changed majors. Oddly of those that made it into pharmacy school, the vast majority passed and became pharmacists.

But parents in general are more likely to be conservative, so that’s not a satisfying answer. Where are the con-parents?

I know a Doctor of Medicine....that couldn't change a light bulb..but he's a great Doctor.

Great thing about it...he knows he's an idiot....in some ways. And he laughs about it...
