Ernie Lacroix reached two milestones on February 23: He finished his 20th-straight Cowtown 5K, and his first race as a 100-year-old.
The Fort Worth, Texas, resident hit the century mark the day before on February 22, and what better way to celebrate than to do so by embarking on that time-honored tradition?
I have no idea of what prompted me to give the Cowtown a go, Lacroix told Runners World. I knew beforehand that I didnt have a chance to win anything, but all the people obviously enjoying the competition looked like fun, so I gave it a go. I cant think of any other reason.
Running (or walking, as he refers to his not-so-brisk pace) was not something Lacroix has always done, though he did exercise a lot while in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Now, at 100, he says he is in the worst shape of (his) life at the present timebut he is looking to see what he can do to change that.
I am working on that by walking and starting an exercise program, Lacroix said. Before my wife became ill, I was playing golf twice a week for years, walking always. Three days a week were gym days.
That renewed focus on exercise paid off this year, as Lacroix cruised with his squadron of family, friends, and supporters to finish in 1 hour and 15 minutes. The mayor even issued a proclamation, dubbing February 23, 2019 Ernest Lacroix Day.
