A lion killed a young worker at a wildlife conservatory Sunday after it got loose from a locked space, the center said.

Alexandra Black, 22, of New Palestine, Indiana, was killed Sunday after being attacked by the lion in an enclosure that was being cleaned at the Conservators Center, news outlets reported, citing a statement from the Caswell County Sheriff's Office.

The lion was shot and killed after attempts to tranquilize the animal failed, deputies said. A "husbandry team" led by a professionally trained animal keeper was carrying out the routine cleaning when the lion somehow got loose, the center said in a statement.

Black was deeply devoted to the care of animals, her social media pages indicate. The center where she died describes itself as “a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to reconnecting people with #wildlife through #education and #conservation.”

I wouldn’t go in any enclosure where a man eating animal resides.

She may have been too trusting of wild animals.

Here she is with a captive wolf.

We have been to this conservatory numerous times. The park is extremely conscientious about safety, both for the visitors and staff.

It just goes to show that anything can go sideways.

It is a tragedy for this young woman. Prayers for the family.

it got loose from a locked space

Really? Is this like those instances where someone unloads their gun and then shoots themselves while cleaning it?

African lions breed enthusiastically in captivity. Feed them and you end up with a large excess of lions. They are very expensive to feed, because they eat so much meat.

That is how you end up with lions at a place like this. People buy them, thinking they will be such a *cool* pet. Then the lions grow up...

Somebody screwed up.
I am certain they had a lock-out, tag-out safety procedure that was violated.

The mobsterJoey Gallo kept a caged lion in the basement of his social club. He would take delinquent loan shark customers down there to help convince them they better pay up now. Reportedly it was very effective.

In WWI, the famous French/American ace Gervais Raoul Lufbery had two pet lions he just let roam around the aerodrome!

One was named Whiskey, the other, Soda. (Whiskey is gnawing on him in the bottom photo)

From The WW I Centennial site:
"...For the members of the Lafayette Escadrille, German antiaircraft fire, malfunctioning equipment, and poison gas were not enough excitement. To spice things up even more on the front lines, several of the pilots purchased a lion while on furlough in Paris, naming it Whiskey (how they got it back to base on a passenger coach is another story). After a while, though, one lion in their camp wasn’t enough; they purchased a second lion, and aptly named it Soda. Whiskey and Soda soon became fixtures in the Escadrille base, developing feline affection for several of the pilots, especially Gervais Raoul Lufbery. Unfortunately, though, after the two alpha-predators ate one of the Captain’s expensive hats, Whiskey and Soda were donated to the Paris Zoo...

I forget what book I read it in, but they said the sight of the lions just walking around terrorized some people...rightfully so!
