60 years ago today, December 10, 1958, a remarkable comeback in the history of professional boxing occurred when 42 year old Archie Moore overcame what appeared to be almost certain defeat to retain his world light heavyweight boxing title against 29 year old Yvon Durelle.
Here are the highlights and here is the full fight, and here are the records of Moore and Durelle.
The rematch was more one-sided.
I begged my Dad for boxing lessons. He arranged lessons from a great guy, a former drill sergeant in the army. He didn't know shiite about boxing and there was no competition circuit back then.
I got in fist fights but I usually lost because of my size.
I am now 70 years old, but work out hard everyday...and HIIT 3 times a week.
I am too damn old to fight and am still afraid of hurting somebody.
All that said, this was a good video.;-)
It brings back a lot of memories. Of when men loved to fight. No victimhood, just knuckle samitches.
Great post!
My Dad was in line at the DMV, and Archie Moore was in line next to him. It was probably one of the high points in his life, meeting and chatting with Archie Moore, being just a regular guy, renewing his driver’s license.
Like you, I was a boxer when young. I am now near 70, and do not work out. The speed and power are long, long gone, but the reflexes are still there. I dont think you ever lose them.
