Transgender male boxer Patricio Manuel makes history with a win in his pro debut

An emotional six-year journey proved worth every step for Patricio Manuel on Saturday when he climbed into the ring at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio to become the first transgender male boxer in U.S. history.

Twelve minutes later he climbed out with a win in his professional debut, pounding out a unanimous decision over Mexican super-featherweight Hugo Aguilar.

“I wouldn’t trade any of it. It was worth everything I went through to get to this point,” Manuel said. “I’m a professional boxer now.”

He added: “The best part of tonight — once I got to the arena and starting getting ready, get the adrenaline rushing, step through those ropes, [greet] my opponent — I loved it all.”

Manuel, 33, fought in the 2012 Olympic trials as a female, then months later began the long transition to male. It was a trip that involved surgery and hormone treatments, an endless trail of red tape to get licensed and the loss of a coach and a training facility when neither proved willing to work with Manuel after she became a he.

There are two different types of transgenders: Mit swanze stucker und eier; und ohne swanze stucker un eier. We have to consider them separately.

Steroids are illegal unless you’re transgender.

So, this person who was born as a woman is able to take hormones to improve her strength, and then enter a super featherweight boxing competition. Seems fair.

Is her male competitor allowed to take muscle-boosting hormones as well?

Can a straight male boxer use testosterone?

If not, could a straight male boxer declare himself a transgender and begin testosterone supplements?

Why don't we just get it over with and make all sports co-ed.

I'm only half tongue-in-cheek here.

If women are good enough at basketball to join the NBA, let them. If they are good enough at baseball to make the major leagues, let them.

Of course, this negates any need for "women's leagues" of any sport. I mean if a man can put on a dress and join them, what purpose does a "women's league" serve? And vice versa.

Just co-mingle the sexes in every sport and whoever is the best makes the team, regardless of gender.

Started out as an Olympic hopeful female boxer. Add a bunch of testosterone and steroids, and heck, he might even win a featherweight title.

You are missing the irony. Reverse the genders in your argument and you have it.

His mother said she knew from an early age that Manuel, born Patricia, was different from other girls her age. His grandmother was the one who pushed him into boxing in high school, gifting him with a boxing club membership at Christmas to help him lose weight (Pictured.
