Queen Victoria’s black silk bodices with 36-inch waists are set to fetch £9,000 at auction [tr]

Black mourning clothes worn by Queen Victoria following the death of her husband have been discovered 150 years later - by the family of one of her servants who 'took them as mementos'. The three black bodices, which formed the top half of her famous two-piece mourning dresses, were worn by the 4ft 8in monarch in the 1860s and '70s after Prince Albert's untimely death in 1861. The auctioneers say it is uncommon to find items from earlier in the monarch's life, with most of it coming from her last decade in the 1890s. They are much smaller than outfits she wore later on in life, when her bust and waist had ballooned to 48ins.

The garment was cut for a 40 inch bust. Victoria sure had a nice figure in her youth. :)

I would not be surprised if the final price went way over 9,000 pounds. There seems to be a hot market for Victoria memorabilia.

I think you’re right. 9000 pounds sounds ridiculously low.

In a limited way you are right. In general the market Victorian and all antiques is dead. Millenials do not want that stuff.

The exception is the Steam Punk influence and that shows up in a demand for Victorian clothing.

Steam Punk is a modern recall of the invention, exploration, discovery and optimism of the 19th century.

I like it.

The garment have been “discovered” by the family? Must not clean out their closets very often.

Her size is ok, a lot of fashion models these days seem to want to look like anorexic boys. Give me a girl with some meat on her bones (and I agree with Gus in ‘Lonesome Dove’ about rotund women).
