Confederate "General" Julius Howell Recalls the 1860s
YouTube ^ | May 2, 2014 | Julius Howell

Posted on 11/24/2018 3:56:36 PM PST by Pelham

Julius Howell enlisted at 16 to fight for the Confederacy in 1862. In this 1947 recording in DC, Howell at age 101, recalls his Civil War exploits as a cavalryman at Petersburg and Richmond and his memory of the assassination of President Lincoln from a Union POW camp. The title of general is in ironic quotes because his was an honorary moniker bestowed on him years later by a Confederacy society.

How two of President John Tyler's grandsons are still alive, 174 years later

I ought to give this its own thread because it is so unbelievable.

Indeed. It’s a historical oddity we will likely never see again. BTW Grover Cleveland’s grandson George is alive & well in NH.

I used to run into him in the local country store when I had my camp in central NH. He looks just like his grandaddy.

"...Grover Cleveland’s grandson, George..."

That is also a really cool story. How neat to hear stories!

Panhandle. It’s rare for any family to have roots like that in this era.

bought a farm from an 78 yr old man whose grandmother told him she was 4 yrs old when her grandfather was shot by raiders during the civil war. She recalls hearing her GF say “Do not shoot me in front of my grandchild!”

His last words.
