Frank Pedreira, MD, recalls the following:
Denise, a 32-year-old woman with three children (Laura, Steven, and Stephanie) ranging in age from 2 7 years became pregnant for the fourth time. Her previous pregnancies were completely uneventful, and her three children were healthy, active, and bright. She and her husband were healthy and well.
Her pregnancy was proceeding normally until the sixth month when a routine sonogram was interpreted by her doctor as compatible with dwarfism. She was sent to a Metropolitan University Medical Center where she was examined and a repeat sonogram was ordered. The sonogram reconfirmed the findings of limb shortening suggestive of dwarfism. Additionally, a cardiac defect was diagnosed. Denise was told that abortion was an option she should consider.
She and her husband, Mark, both professed Christians, decided this was not an option and elected to have the baby A baby boy was born at term after a spontaneous labor and remarkably easy delivery. The child was completely normal, without evidence of dwarfism or heart abnormality. His birth weight was 8 pounds, length 21 inches, and Apgar score 9/10. The parents named him John.
Presently, at age one year, John is growing, gaining and developing very well, without any evidence of defect or disease.

I noticed a couple of these sonogram error stories posted today.
What is the error rate for gross misdiagnoises?
“Well, excuusssse me!”
Same thing with me, they said 75% chance of down syndrome. I refused further test as this was just from a blood test. My baby was fine and that was 25 years ago. I was 45 at the time.
Are there no dwarf groups to be outraged over this? Imagine if they told her to abort the baby because it’s part black or Hispanic?
I so wish these people would consider suing their doctor and the others who diagnosed dwarfism and heart disease for pain and suffering or whatever would be applicable. It is unconscionable that doctors would recommend terminating a pregnancy for these reasons, and later found out to be so completely wrong.
Well, she switched doctors....voila....3 months pregnant.
That little girl is 24 now and going for her PHD at Brown. God has been very good to us.
Perhaps these doctors should win free late term abortions.
I had a debate with a liberal coworker who supported late term abortion. I asked him how late and he said there is no limit. Then I asked him how old he is. He suddenly shut up.
My daughter-in-law was repeatedly encouraged to abort her baby after repeated sonograms stating there was something wrong with the bones in her skull. Same refusal to abort. At 18 mo.old this same baby was playing computer games. Her little legs didn’t even touch the floor. She’s now studying software engineering at a reputable college.
Shouldn't there have been a genetic factor for the doctor to jump to a dwarfism conclusion? Does the heart defect diagnosis sound like a most pathetic rationalization?
Two people I know were suggested to be aborted one due to intellectual disability and another both intellectual and physical. The one with the “intellectual disability” is a network engineer and business owner, the one with both is a hockey player some of you might know (doesn’t speak to his intellectual ability of course, which is normal but, he most certainly isn’t physically disabled).
I would sue this damn doctor into retirement.
Defensive medicine - in case of error, encourage termination so that most people don’t know how often they’re wrong.
“I would sue this damn doctor into retirement.”
You don’t understand doctors being sued over babies born with deformaties is why they are doing this. They would rather be wrong and her abort a well baby then say it was a normal baby and it turn out to be a downs one. A lot of parents would abort a downs baby.
If the baby was aborted would there be an examination to affirm the diagnosis?
Wow! What a great way to get their attention.
They did the exact same thing when my grand-daughter was born 8 years ago. Claimed dwarfism and wanted the parents to opt for an extra $30k in testing. They declined.
She was born norman and, in fact, at age 8 is so good at gymnastics she was admitted into a gymnastics group that normally has a rule that the minimum age is 12. She has an incredibly bubbly personality and has allowed a lot of personal family sh** roll right off her back. She is a truly unique and capable person.
And the doctors said she may have dwarfism and wanted $30k in tests.
This is one reason that, at 65, my wife and I don’t have health insurance. The main reason is that we trust the Lord. But the other reason is that we don’t really need what they are selling. We’ll pay out of pocket for what we do need, assuming we ever have to.
My unborn daughter had a chotoid plexus cyst. We were told that she would likely have, if I remember right, Edward’s Syndrome. They also said she would likely have a long narrow face. They were completely wrong.

When my daughter was carrying her 4th, the sonogram detected microencephalopathy. They recommended abortion. My daughter, a nurse, knew the error rate of sonograms and demanded a second opinion. The other OB/GYN realized that the baby's head was behind her pelvis and that is why it appeared to be small.
He was born healthy.
Here's a case where the baby was indeed born a dwarf, and to dwarf parents who knew it.
Doctors Told Dwarf Couple to Have Abortion Because Their Baby Had Dwarfism Too, They Said No (LifeNews.com)
...Lisa explained how she felt when she first met Nathan. She shared more with the Daily Mail: When I first saw Nathan playing Grumpy, my heart skipped a beat. Id never seen anyone so handsome and I instantly fancied him. I got butterflies in my stomach the first time I went into rehearsal and saw him. I never imagined he would look twice at me.
When the couple found out they were expecting their first baby they were thrilled; but doctors told them that child had two forms of dwarfism and that they should abort.
Thankfully, the couple rejected abortion and in November, Lisa and Nathan welcomed Nathan Jr. into their family. Amazingly, he was born healthy and will have a normal life. Now the couple is preparing their son for a career in acting. In fact, Nathan Jr. travels with them and they care for him backstage during their performances.
